Chapter 29

I listened to James without saying a word, but I did not stop applying the ointment to his wounds.
"Leah?"
He had to call me a few times before I looked up.

I saw my reflection in his clear gaze.
James reached out and caressed my cheeks gently and with love.
I pushed him away, and my hands shook uncontrollably. "You put yourself in danger. What if they killed you as soon as you fell into their hands? Have you ever thought about that?"
He hugged me and pecked my cheek gently. Then, he muttered, "I'm sorry. My only regret was that I didn't think it through and put you in danger. I would never do it again. I'll discuss everything with you in advance from now on, alright?"
For some reason, I felt a strong urge to cry. Tears that I was holding back suddenly started rolling down my cheeks.
The more gentle he sounded, the harder I cried. It was as if I was trying to dry up a lifetime of tears with this cry.

I threw myself into James' arms, grabbing the folds of his shirt with all my might. "James."
"I'm here," he said.
"James," I called out again.
"I'm here," he replied.

I kept calling his name again and again, and he patiently responded to me over and over again.
Then, I fell asleep in his arms after I was all drained from crying.
When I woke up, the warm lights by the bed were on. James was sitting by the bed. "Leah, You're up."
I immediately threw myself into his arms.
"Are you hungry? Why don't I have someone bring some food on a tray?"
I did not answer. I just looked up at him and said, "James."
"Hmm?"
"I saw the photos in the room at the end of the hallway," I said.
I kissed his chin. My eyes were teary, but I had a broad smile. "You've liked me for a long time, haven't you?"
The subconscious response when a person was in danger would never be fake.
That was true for James and for me as well.
Before that day, I had always felt how he liked and cared about me. I had seen his devotion in the photos as well.
However, I had been deeply hurt by the last relationship that I had, so I subconsciously wanted to run away.
After the danger we faced that day, I realized it would be a pity if he did not know how much I liked him.
James lowered his head and gave me a long and gentle kiss.
"Yes," he answered. His eyes were filled with love. "Leah, I like you. I've always liked you. But I should've been the one to confess my feelings to you first."
I could smell the faint sandalwood scent that only belonged to him. His hug was warm and soothing.
"I love you, my dear wife," he said.
I closed my eyes and let my tears streamed down my cheeks. "I love you too, James."
He lowered his body and pinned me on the big, soft bed.
With the moonlight shining through the window, we muttered to each other as lovers. Then, our breath gradually became one.
