Chapter 28

I held a wooden stick tightly and subconsciously shielded James behind me. I was getting more and more nervous as well.
The door opened, and five men walked in. One held a machete, while the other four had baseball bats. Soon, they found James and me hiding in the corner.
As soon as the door opened, James put his back against the wall and leaned on me.
I knew he was deliberately pretending to be disabled, trying to make those men let their guard down. Therefore, I played along with him.
Sure enough, those men started laughing at him. "This crippled man is so useless. Look at him. He can't even stand up. He needs a woman to protect him."
"What a loser."
The leader stared right at me. He handed his machete to the subordinate and said to James, "You're a cripple, yet you have such a beautiful wife. I'm sure you can do nothing but look at her. Why don't you let us have fun with her instead?"
The man extended his hand, trying to pull my arm.
Right at that moment, James took a step forward and punched the man in the face.
James' movements were clean and sharp. I could even hear the man's nose breaking.
Then, James kicked him to the ground.
Just as the others were about to charge forward, police officers and our bodyguards arrived right on time.
While everything was in a mess, I kept staring at the man James had kicked to the ground.
I was sure I saw a gun hidden on his waist when he walked over earlier.
Sure enough, he had his gun drawn, aiming it at James.
I could not even think. My mind was completely blank.
I followed my instinct and jumped in front of James, trying to block the shot for him.
I heard a gunshot and the sound of my heart pounding out of my chest.
However, I did not feel the pain that I had anticipated. I looked at James in a daze but could not say a word.
"Leah… Leah…" James hugged me tightly in his arms.
His voice was shaking. I could tell that he was scared. "Thank goodness you're fine, Leah. I wouldn't be able to forgive myself otherwise."
"James… Are you hurt?" I ran my hands all over his face. Tears started pouring as I touched the blood on this shirt.
"It's just a minor injury. Don't be scared, Leah. I'm fine…"
"But you're bleeding, James. You're bleeding so much…" I gradually went from sobbing to crying uncontrollably.
"It's a superficial wound. Be good. Don't cry. We're fine. I'll take you home now. Good girl."
James picked me up. His arms and his strides were strong.
Only then did I gradually become at ease and let myself lie in his arms.
I found out later, when we were on our way back, that the man had fired the shot, but it did not hit me.
A police officer managed to fire a shot before the man, so his bullets had missed the mark.
James told me that it was a setup that he had plotted. The purpose was to lure the mastermind out.
That person was a senior to James. He was also one of the founding members of the company. He was once on par with James' grandfather.
It was because of him that James' legs were injured. He played along to make them let their guards down and pretended to be disabled.
At that moment, everything had settled down. Those people had committed multiple crimes, so the law would punish them severely.
From then on, nobody in the Blackwell family or the company could fight against James anymore.
