Chapter 27

James woke me up.
My head still hurt after I barely regained consciousness.
"Leah, are you feeling better?" he asked.

I looked at him in a daze and asked subconsciously, "What about you? Are you hurt anywhere?"
I was anxious because he could not move his legs. I started to scan his body from top to bottom.
His suit jacket was nowhere to be found. His shirt was messy and had a few buttons missing.
His watch was gone. His hair, which had always been neat, was slightly messy.
"I'm fine. I'm not hurt. Don't worry. I have a tracker on me. Someone will come looking for us in an hour tops. Don't be afraid. I'm here."
James was still able to remain calm, even when we were in a situation like that. However, it was without a doubt that his composure soothed my nerves.

I forced myself to sit up and observe the surroundings.
We were in an abandoned warehouse. It was empty and shabby. There were some small rusty accessories and wooden scraps on the ground.
I could hear faint voices outside the warehouse. However, it was too soft, so I could not hear them clearly.
I forced myself to get up and walk to the door. Then, I realized the door was locked from the outside. It could not be opened from the inside.

The windows were high up, and I could barely reach them. There was nothing in the warehouse for me to use as a platform.
Just as I felt troubled, I was picked up by a pair of strong hands.
My exclamation was stuck in my throat.
It was James.
However, he could not walk…
I forced myself to hold back with my questions and shock as I peeped out the window. Then, I described the view outside the window to James.
James quickly confirmed our location.
He put me down and whispered, "Someone will find this place in 15 minutes tops. Don't worry."
I nodded, then looked at his legs, pursing my lips.
I had realized that the muscles in his legs had not atrophied on the night of our wedding. I thought he had taken great care of his legs and did not think too much about it.
I feared it would make him sad, so I had never asked him about his legs.
However, it seemed his legs were fine.
I thought of how he was calm the whole time today and almost figured it all out.
"I'll explain to you after we get home. We must ensure we're safe while we wait for help." He held my hand, pulling me into his arms. "In short, just trust me, Leah."
