I pretended to be shocked,rushing to her.“Evelyn!Are you okay?Don’t scare me!”
She shoved me,wailing,“Michael!My boy!Why?”
Sophia,crocodile tears flowing,urged the team,“Do something!Save him!”
The teammates exchanged glances.One said,“Ma’am,didn’t you say to respect his wish to stay here?This is actually a fitting end — the snow is a natural burial.”
“Exactly,”another added.“The snow is too deep. We’d be putting our lives at risk if we tried to dig him out.”
“Wish?Screw that!”Evelyn roared,pointing at me.“This wretch killed him!Now she wants him left to rot!I’ll never forgive her!”
I played innocent.“Evelyn,what?It was an accident—”
“Accident?You planned this!”she shrieked.“You wanted him out of the way so you could run off with your lover! As long as I’m alive, you won’t get away with this!”
Her words shook me with rage,but I held back.I needed everyone to see she killed him.
“Evelyn,calm down!That’s not true!”I pleaded,tears falling.“I wanted to bring him down,give him a proper burial!”
“Spare me your fake tears!”she spat,begging the team.“Please,save my boy!I’ll pay anything!”
Sophia sobbed,“Yes,save him!We can’t let him die!”
The team,annoyed,held firm.“Ma’am,you said it was his wish.It’s too dangerous.”
“Wish?!”Evelyn screamed,grabbing a teammate.“He’s not dead!Just unconscious!Please save him!”
“What?”The team gaped,stunned.
“There’s no way. You must be mistaken.”
“He’s gone,ma’am.”
“He’s not dead!”Evelyn’s eyes were wild.“Believe me!I’ll give you anything!”
Sophia echoed,“He’s alive!Please!”
The team,confused by their desperation,wavered.
I watched,feeling a sense of satisfaction. The longer they hesitated, the more certain Michael’s death became.
I gasped,pretending to be shocked.“What?He’s not dead?Just unconscious?Why didn’t you tell me?”
“Please,save him!I’ll give you anything!”I pulled a card from my pocket,shoving it at a teammate.“His card—all yours.Password’s six sixes.Just save him!”
The team hesitated,then agreed.“Fine,we’ll try.But if we can’t,don’t blame us.”
“Of course!”I nodded.
Driven by money,they descended the ledge,risking their lives.
I waited with Evelyn and Sophia,“anxious.”
