The icy chill hit his skin, but he didn’t flinch.
Drugged.They’re thorough.
I sneered inwardly.
“Michael!Wake up!Don’t do this to me!”Evelyn wailed, cursing me.“It’s that wretched wife of yours! Why couldn’t she have been the one to die?”
Sophia comforted her,urging,“Enough.We’ve seen him.It’s dangerous—let’s go.”
Evelyn, realizing they needed to get me away before Michael froze for real, agreed.
But I wasn’t finished.“I’m taking him down!I’ll cremate him,give him peace.He can’t stay here!”
“Cremate him?”Evelyn panicked.“No!”
“Why not?”I feigned confusion.“Don’t you want him to rest in peace?”
She stammered, but Sophia jumped in.“Michael loved exploring.Staying here was his wish.Don’t betray that,Rachel.”
Evelyn latched on.“Exactly! You caused his death, and now you won’t even respect his final wish? What a heartless wife!”
Cremation was off the table, but I wasn’t worried.Michael’s body was already cooling—he was as good as half-dead.
I needed Evelyn and Sophia to finish him, clearing my name.
I played along.“Fine,leave him here.But I’m staying a bit longer.”
Evelyn snapped,“You wretch!You didn’t cherish him alive,and now you’re faking grief?Get down the mountain—he doesn’t want you here!”
“Exactly,Rachel,”Sophia added.“You’ve done enough.Don’t upset Evelyn anymore.Besides, there are some matters at Michael’s company that need your attention.”
“Company?My husband’s gone—why should I care?”I refused.
As time dragged on and they grew more desperate, they rushed over to the ledge and tried to pull me away.
Seeing my opportunity, I dodged just as Evelyn aimed a kick at me, exposing Michael behind me.
Her foot hit him, sending him tumbling off the ledge, buried instantly by falling snow.
Perfect.Last life, you kicked me to death. This time, your mom returns the favor.
