Chapter 24: Eve of the Trial

488words
With the full moon night approaching, Greyson Castle was shrouded in a tense and solemn atmosphere. Everyone was making final preparations for the trial at Moon Shadow Valley.

Lyra stood by the bedroom window, her fingers gently caressing the Moon Laurel Tears pendant around her neck. These past two days, the influence of the Dark Moon Stone had grown stronger; even with the pendant's protection, she could still feel the dark power attempting to invade her thoughts.

"Ready?" Rayne gently embraced her from behind, resting his chin on her shoulder.

Lyra leaned into his embrace: "I don't know. The power of the Dark Moon Stone is stronger than I imagined. Sometimes, I can't even distinguish which memories are real and which are illusions it created."

Rayne tightened his arms: "Remember our connection. No matter what happens, believe in it."

Lyra turned to face him, holding his face in her hands: "If we fail tomorrow..."

Rayne gently kissed her forehead: "We won't fail. Even if we do, I won't let you face it alone. This time, I'll protect you until the end."

A gentle knock came from outside the door, followed by Mira's voice: "Lyra, Rayne, I have something important to tell you."

They opened the door, and Mira quickly slipped in, her face showing signs of tension: "My familiar just returned. Karen has taken the Dark Moon Stone to Moon Shadow Valley, hiding it in some secret location. He plans to activate its full power when the trial begins."

Lyra felt a chill: "This means we must deal with both the Dark Moon Stone and Karen during the trial."

Mira nodded: "Not only that, he has also convinced some members of the council. If you show any abnormality during the trial, they will immediately declare you unfit to lead the Greyson Family."

Rayne's expression grew solemn: "He wants to ensure through political means that even if we survive, we'll lose our position."

"We need a new plan," Lyra said firmly, "Since Karen has already taken the Dark Moon Stone to the canyon, we must find and purify it there."

Mira took out a small vial from her pocket: "This is the strongest Silver Fern essence I could brew. It cannot completely resist the Dark Moon Stone, but it can buy you some time."

Lyra took the vial, gratefully holding Mira's hand: "Thank you for taking such a great risk to help us."

Mira shook her head: "I'm just making up for the regrets of my past life. Tomorrow, I'll distract Karen as much as possible to create an opportunity for you."

After Mira left, Lyra and Rayne exchanged glances, understanding each other's determination without words. Tomorrow, they would face the final test, and this time, they wouldn't repeat past mistakes.

Outside the window, the moon was approaching fullness, its silver light pouring over the land, as if foretelling that a turning point of destiny was about to arrive.
