Chapter 23

I thought of how James had been working unusually late recently, but I was skeptical.
Brad and James were elites among their peers, but Brad's ability was not comparable to James'. On top of that, the Blackwell family was far more powerful than the Coleman family.
I did not believe that Brad's actions would impact James.
However, I became unsure again after I heard what my best friend said next.
Rumour had it that Brad had found a flaw in the operations of the Blackwell family's company. He then used the public's opinion to create a stir, causing the price of the company's shares to be affected.
Other than Brad, one of the company's founding members was also at odds with James. He then took the chance to backstab James.
I felt like a rock was on my chest after I hung up the call. My chest was not hurting, but my emotions were heavy. It was deeply upsetting.
I could not believe I had to learn about this news from my best friend.
James probably feared that I would be worried, so he kept everything from me.
I wanted a chance to ask him about it after he got home that night, but he went straight to the study. He did not enter the bedroom until late at night.
I got up as soon as I heard him coming into the room. "Are you all done?"
"Mmhmm." He looked exhausted. "I'm going on a business trip for a few days tomorrow."
I went up to rub his temples for him and said, "I'll pack your bag for you."
James hummed in response with his eyes closed.
The room fell silent.
After I was done with the massage, I held his hand and asked softly, "I heard some rumors recently, and I wondered if they were true. Part of the reason the company has been so busy is because of Brad. Is that right?"
James looked at me.
The warm light shone above his head, casting a shadow on his forehead. James' gaze was penetrating. It was as if he could see through other people's minds.
"That's not exactly correct. The company has indeed run into some small problems, but it wasn't because of Brad. The tricks he pulled weren't enough to cause the company any harm. I'm just cleaning up some rotten apples," he said.
"Really?" I asked.
"Of course, silly. Do you think Brad has the ability to shake the foundation of my company?"
Of course not. I quickly got the answer in my head.
The Blackwell family must have experienced its fair share of turmoil to get where they were.
The obstacle at that moment was rather minor. It would be all fine once they crossed it.
"I got it." I became much more relaxed. I sounded more cheery as I said, "Do you want me to give you a bath?"
I thought James would be tired from working late that night and would not think about anything else, so I teased him a little.
Unexpectedly, James seemed excited. "Alright. I'll be in your hands tonight, then, my dear wife."
