Chapter 8

Yesterday, when I saw Madison leave and then received Evan's check-in call, I had a gut feeling that they would steal again in this life.
To be safe—and to help this poor couple— I specifically asked Willow to come with me and helped pay their daughter's surgery fees before checking out of the hospital early in the morning.
But from an outsider's perspective, my actions must have seemed bizarre.
After all, who would just throw away five million dollars for a stranger?
As I considered this, Evan let out a sinister laugh.
"Well, well, Caitlin. You dated me for so long while hiding your identity. Who knows what your real intentions were?
"And now, you deliberately paid for their daughter's medical bills just so you could frame Madison. A vile woman like you has no right to live in this world!"
He then turned to Alfie and Demi. "She used your daughter to set this all up! What are you waiting for? Go teach her a lesson already!"
Evan's face twisted with rage. His expression practically screamed that he wanted me dead.
But at this point, Alfie and Demi were too grateful to me to even consider raising a hand against me.
Right now, everyone in the bank was firmly on my side. They bombarded Evan with skeptical questions.
"Is this really your boyfriend, Caitlin? Because it seems like he's been thinking about taking your life this whole time."
"Why would Caitlin spend five million dollars just to frame you guys? Are you dumb? She helped Mr. and Mrs. Austin quietly, and now you're twisting it into some huge crime?"
I flashed a grateful smile at my colleagues before pulling out my phone.
"I'm calling the police. Madison, I don't know how you stole the PIN or disguised yourself as me. But I trust that the authorities will give us a reasonable explanation soon."
The second I mentioned the police, Madison panicked. She lunged forward and knocked my phone out of my hand.
"Why do we need to get the cops involved? This isn't even that serious! You've already covered the money, haven't you? Since you're so rich, why not just let this go and be the bigger person?"
Evan immediately nodded in agreement.
But none of us were fools.
George swiftly pulled down the security shutters, trapping everyone inside the bank. "Nobody leaves until the police arrive."
Seeing this, Madison broke down and screamed, "You're all in on this! You're trying to frame me! I didn't do anything! Let me out of here! Wait. I have proof! I was with Evan all night yesterday!"
Evan caught on immediately and nodded vigorously.
"That's right! I'm a witness. I can confirm that Madison never left my side yesterday. Let us go. Their daughter is already fine. What's the point of keeping us here?"
I spread my hands. My voice dripped with mockery as I said, "That's five million dollars. And you're saying it's not serious?
"You just said it was their child's life-saving money, even trying to push this poor couple into killing me over it. But now, suddenly, you want to brush it off like it's nothing?"
