Her face was pale, her legs wrapped in thick bandages.
Whenever a male nurse entered, she would tremble with fear and grip my hand tightly.
That fear was bone-deep.
There was movement at the door again. It was supplements and toys sent by Alexander's people.
I immediately threw everything out.
"Tell Alexander to stop sending this junk!"
Hearing Alexander's name, Lily hid in my arms, terrified.
"Mommy, I'm scared…"
I stroked her hair, my heart breaking.
In the afternoon, Liam came, holding a stack of legal documents.
"Evelyn, the divorce papers are ready. The asset division is drafted according to your requests."
Seeing Liam, Lily actually showed a long-lost smile.
"Mr Murphy!"
Liam gently patted her head. "How are you feeling today, Lily?"
"Much better. I'm not scared when you're with me."
Watching this, warmth surged in my heart.
At least someone truly loved Lily.
My phone rang. It was Alexander.
"Evelyn, can we talk? I'll give you all the company shares, just don't divorce me…"
I hung up immediately.
Money? He thought I needed money?
What I needed was a normal husband, a qualified father!
The next day, Liam brought news.
"Isabella spilled all of Alexander's dirty secrets to get a lighter sentence."
Looking at the information, it was shocking.
Tax evasion, commercial bribery, hostile takeovers…
So this was the man I married.
"And this." Liam handed me a recording.
Isabella's voice was on it:
"Daddy loves me the most. He said if I just acted cute, that old hag Evelyn would obey."
"That little brat Lily too. Daddy doesn't care about her at all. Otherwise, why would he believe my stupid lies?"
I clenched my fists.
This was Alexander's beloved "innocent" girl.
That night, Lily suddenly developed a high fever.
I carried her to the emergency room, Liam following me close behind.
The doctor said it was a complication from infection.
I stayed by her bedside, watching Lily's fever-flushed little face, tears streaming down uncontrollably.
Just then, Alexander appeared at the door.
He looked utterly exhausted, unshaven, eyes bloodshot.
"Evelyn, let me see Lily…"
Lily saw him and immediately screamed in terror.
"Mommy! Mommy! He's here!"
She clung to my arm desperately.
Alexander's face turned pale instantly.
He looked at his daughter's fearful eyes, swaying unsteadily.
"Lily… Daddy didn't…"
"Get out!" I stood up, pointing at the door. "Get out now!"
Alexander opened his mouth but ultimately said nothing and turned to leave.
Liam came over with a damp towel to cool Lily down.
"It's okay, Lily. I'm here."
Lily gradually calmed down.
Through the window, I saw Alexander standing in the rain downstairs.
He just stood there, motionless.
The rain soaked his clothes.
I glanced and closed the curtains.
He deserved this.
On the third day, news broke of the Pierce Group's scandal.
Stock prices plummeted. Partners terminated contracts.
Alexander, the business elite, instantly became a pariah.
I felt no satisfaction.
Only deep exhaustion.
After Lily's condition stabilized, I started discharge procedures.
A nurse told me someone had been waiting downstairs.
"That man has been standing there for three days and nights. Security can't persuade him to leave."
I didn't respond.
When we left the hospital, I carried Lily, and Liam handled the luggage.
Passing by downstairs, I saw Alexander leaning against a tree, eyes closed.
His face was sallow, lips purple.
Having lost part of her memory due to psychological trauma, Lily asked in my arms,
"Mommy, who is that man?"
"I don't know him," I replied calmly.
As the car started, I saw Alexander watching our car drive away, reaching out as if to grasp something.
