Alexander's face turned deathly pale.
He stared fixedly at the nails on the tray, his pupils contracting.
Isabella let out a scream, her body starting to shake uncontrollably.
"No! It wasn't me!" She shook her head frantically. "They're lying! Daddy, believe me!"
But her reaction gave everything away.
Alexander slowly turned his head, staring at Isabella with a look that could kill.
"You… better have an explanation for me."
He spat the words out through gritted teeth. "What… is all this?"
Watching this scene, I felt no satisfaction.
Only endless sorrow and heartache for Lily.
The truth was finally out.
But the price was Lily's battered and broken body.
Alexander's hand tightened around Isabella's neck, veins bulging.
"Explain! Explain clearly!"
Isabella's face turned red, her eyes bulging out. The fear of death made her completely break down.
"I… I was jealous of them! I hate Evelyn! I hate Lily even more!"
She spat out the truth haltingly, each word like a knife stabbing my heart.
"I bribed those men… I thought you would take my side…"
Alexander released his grip. Isabella fell heavily to the ground.
He stood frozen, as if struck by lightning.
Lily lay dying on the hospital bed. The blood-stained nails sat on the tray, cold and glaring.
I looked at Alexander's pale face, my heart numb.
"Now you know the truth?"
"Unfortunately, it's too late."
Alexander turned sharply to look at me, his eyes full of regret and pain.
"The suffering Lily endured, you can never make up for it."
I took out my phone and started dialing my lawyer's number.
Alexander reached out to touch Lily. I shouted sharply to stop him.
"Don't you dare touch her with your filthy hands!"
His hand froze mid-air, trembling, like a child who had done wrong.
Just then, the door opened, and Dr Liam Murphy walked in with his medical team.
His calm professionalism warmed my heart.
"Arrange for a transfer immediately. Use the best equipment," Liam's voice was steady.
Alexander suddenly knelt down.
"Evelyn, I was wrong! It's all my fault!"
His knees hit the floor with a heavy thud.
I looked down at him, my eyes like I was looking at a dead man.
"I will never forgive you."
"I just want Lily to be safe, and then to leave you completely."
As Isabella was dragged away, she was still cursing.
"Evelyn, you b**ch! You'll get what's coming to you! Lily won't end well either!"
Her voice faded into the distance.
Alexander stood up, his eyes bloodshot.
"I'll make everyone who hurt Lily pay!"
He started making frantic calls, mobilizing all his resources.
But I knew this was just his way of escaping reality.
Liam walked over to me and said softly, "Everything will be alright."
When Lily was wheeled into surgery, she opened her eyes.
She looked at me, her lips moving.
"Mommy… it doesn't hurt anymore…"
My tears finally fell.
Not for Alexander's remorse, but for my daughter's strength.
Alexander tried to follow, but was stopped by security.
"Sir, you can't go in."
He struggled desperately, shouting Lily's name.
I glanced back at him.
This once proud and triumphant man now looked like a lost dog.
"Alexander, this is the price of your choice."
The elevator doors slowly closed, separating the past from the future.
Outside the operating room, Liam waited with me for a full eight hours.
He said nothing, just sat there quietly.
At 3 a.m., the doctor came out.
"The surgery was successful, but recovery will take a long time."
I finally breathed a sigh of relief.
Lily had survived. That was all that mattered.
Alexander appeared again at some point, his face haggard.
"Evelyn, let me see Lily, just one look."
I shook my head coldly.
"She doesn't need to see you."
"You're no longer her father."
