My parents,now roused,opened the door and let them in.
Nathan’s sister,Sophia Spencer,the family leech,was living off his success.With her was her husband,Tom Carter,puffed up like an angry rooster in our living room.
Seeing me,Sophia sneered:“Mr.and Mrs.Harper,great parenting.Raising a gem like Emily.Truly eye-opening!”
“Thanks.My daughter’s fine,”Mom replied coolly,lounging on the couch with her legs crossed.
Sophia froze.She had expected deference,not this attitude.
Tom jumped in:“Your family’s clueless.Three years freeloading,and now divorce?Nathan said Emily wants$3 million!What,after his wealth?”
I scoffed:“Wealth?Nathan’s worth over $30 million.Is my$3 million wrong?”
“If you think it’s too much,I’ll sue.I’ll ask my lawyer whether his cheating makes him the at-fault party,deserving less.”
“What?You’re lying!”
I shoved Chloe’s video in their faces:“Look.In bed together.Shouldn’t I divorce?”
They hadn’t expected this.Thanks to Chloe,Nathan’s face was clear,his eager expression and sounds undeniable.Even Sophia blushed.
Mom slammed the table:“The Spencers raised a fine son.Cheating,bringing her home,and questioning my daughter!”
“Sophia,is this how you guide your brother?”
Sophia,unprepared for the reversal,flushed red.
She lived lavishly off Nathan,buying jewelry and strutting at galas,all thanks to my family’s support.
Now she dared confront me,only to be blindsided by the video.
I raised a brow:“Tell Nathan to sign,or I’ll leak this video.”
“We Harpers aren’t what we were.I’ve got nothing to lose.Your family is in a different situation.”
The Spencers,newly rich,had no real power.Sophia knew that if Nathan fell,their family would collapse.
She panicked.Tom stammered:“You can’t!You were married three years!”
I ignored them and stated:“Three days.If Nathan doesn’t agree,I’ll send the video to the press.Let’s see how your family fares.”
They panicked.Sophia mumbled,but Mom opened the door and shooed them out.
Turning to me,she said:“If I’d known they were this low,we’d have cut ties sooner.Why wait?”
“You’re too soft!”
I sighed.It wasn’t softness.I’d wanted a life with Nathan.
When we met,I liked his clean-cut charm and his seeming good upbringing.
But his facade fooled me.He used me and then discarded me.
