Before he could act, I interrupted Emily's explanations impatiently, wearing an expression of exhaustion and disappointment. "You've been talking for ages and haven't said anything useful. I'll ask you one last time, in front of Jack, are you saying you got hit because of him?"
Emily was full of lies, but only when the person involved wasn't around. Now, with Jack standing right there, if she dared to shift the blame entirely onto him as before, it would definitely enrage him. Since she had chosen Jack in the first place, intending to use him to carry out her evil plan, she surely knew that she should never provoke him.
She opened her mouth as if to say something, but in the end, she clammed up. The hatred in her eyes when she looked at me was impossible to hide. The more she showed this reaction, the happier I was. In the previous life, our whole family doted on her, yet she easily managed to screw us over and get us killed without a second thought. Jack’s words were full of anger,but it wasn’t directed at me.Instead,most of his anger was aimed at Emily’s actions.After speaking,he turned his gaze to Emily and said in a displeased tone,“Let’s go.Go home right away.We’ll sort out our problems privately.I don’t want others to laugh at us.”
Feeling the neighbors' eyes on him, Jack looked even more irritated. He had achieved nothing in life but cared deeply about his reputation and others' opinion towards him. Now that he had calmed down a bit thanks to my humble attitude, he realized he should handle their affairs behind closed doors since they weren't officially married yet.
Emily flinched at his tone, looking very scared. She even shot me a pitiful look, wanting me to step in. I subtly looked away, pretending not to notice.
Emily reluctantly took a step towards Jack,her expression stiff and forced.Her slow and hesitant attitude made Jack’s expression even darker.Before Jack could lose his temper,another voice came from outside,“No way!My daughter Emily can’t be with this man without any proper explanation!”
A middle-aged woman,dressed plainly but with a mean expression,barged into the house.She grabbed Emily’s hand and shielded her like a mother hen protecting her chicks.
Emily panicked instantly,looking from her to me and then to my parents,at a loss for what to do.She pulled the woman’s sleeve several times and gave her meaningful glances,but the woman didn’t understand her intentions and started accusing us in the house,“Emily has called you Mom and Dad for so many years,yet you just casually handed her over to a good-for-nothing poor guy.What kind of people are you!”
“You just think she’s not your biological daughter and don’t want her to inherit your property,so you don’t care about her!”
She pointed at us,looking indignant,but her eyes were filled with greed.
My father angrily stood up and started yelling at her, "Bullshit! We've worked our butts off raising her all these years, treating her like our own, giving her everything she wanted. Sometimes we treated her better than our biological daughter!”
"How dare you, someone who dumped her at birth, accuse us!"
My dad, usually so gentle, cursed because of the mess Emily had caused. I rushed over to calm him down, reminding him not to let them get to him.
Looking at my father, who was panting with anger, my mother's eyes turned red. She ignored the middle-aged woman and instead looked at Emily and asked, "After all these years we've raised you, do you really view us that way too?"
Emily didn’t expect my mother to ask such a question and was stunned for a moment.Then she quickly shook her head nervously,“Mom,I’ve never thought that way.You and Dad have both been very good to me…”
"Enough, you don't need to say more. We know if what you say is true or not."
My mother waved her hand to make her stop,looking extremely tired.She hadn’t been in good health,so I quickly supported her and helped her sit back on the sofa.Then I faced Emily and the others alone.

Her voice was loud and impolite. The neighbors who were listening couldn’t help but start whispering and pointing.
