Now,he belittled me to defend another woman.
I couldn't understand how things ended up like this.
Was I not good enough? How bad a woman was I that I drove him away?
I loved him for three years—how could I not be heartbroken?
Suddenly,Emma's face visibly swelled, her breathing growing rapid.
James cursed loudly.
"What's happening?How's it this bad?"
The chef,confused,said,
"I only used half a carrot. It shouldn't be this severe."
James scooped Emma up and rushed to the ship's doctor with her in his arms.
I followed.
The doctor,after examining her,said gravely,
"Miss Larson's ingested too much allergen. She's at risk of shock.I recommend docking immediately and getting her to a proper hospital."
James panicked, instructing the doctor to look after Emma, then headed to the control room.
He wanted to turn the ship around now!
I blocked his path,suggesting,
"We're already halfway through the journey.Turning back takes too long. Why not dock nearby and have someone send Emma to the closest hospital? It won't delay her treatment."
James shoved me aside, his eyes bloodshot.
"No!I have to go with Emma myself! She's allergic to many medications!"
He knew Emma's allergies—but didn't she?
My voice was trembling as I shouted,
"What about me?You turn back now, what will your friends think of me?You're abandoning your fiancée for your ex?"
James glared at me,his tone dripping with scorn.
"Claire, when did you get so vain?Emma's life is at stake, and you only care about what friends think? You just want her dead!"
He stormed into the control room, slamming the door behind him with a bang.
I heard the sharp click of the lock.
James had locked it.
I stared at the door, with disbelief mingling with anger and grief in my heart.
He didn't trust me that he had to stay on guard against me!
Did he think I'd stop him from turning back?I don't even know how to steer a ship.
My throat was so dry I couldn't speak.I swallowed hard.
Turning,I dragged myself back to my room.
Lying in bed,I felt like I'd sunk to the ocean floor, drowned in sorrow, unable to break free.
The ship turned back.
James gave a flimsy excuse to our friends, saying thagt something about his work had suddenly came up.
The weather was grim—dark clouds loomed over us,and the sea was a dangerous patch black, like a sleeping beast.
An uneasy feeling gripped me.I hurried to the control room.
The door was still locked.I knocked, calling,
"James,the weather's bad.Is this route safe?"
James replied confidently,
"Of course! It's the fastest way back to Port Haven. We have to take it!"
Suddenly, the ship started to shake and sway violently.
Winds battered against my face so hard that it stung,I could hear flags whipping in the air.
Then,heavy rain poured down.
The sky was pitch-black.
A storm!
A piercing scream cut through—Emma's.
James flung open the door, rushing towards her room.
The ship rocked harder.Without the captain, the crew scrambled to maintain balance.
I moved slowly, and I could see in the distance that James had Emma in his arms and he was comforting her.
They didn't bother hiding theri affair anymore.
Friends accused him.
"James,you're a heartless jerk!I misjudged you!"
"You'll pay for this!"
Emma, stirring more chaos, looked up from James’ arms with her innocent and delicate face.
"It's my fault.Please don't blame James!"
Friends,furious,snapped,
"You're comforting another woman as Claire's fiancé?Don't you care about her at all?"
James said carelessly,
"Emma's frail.I have to look after her."
"As for Claire, she's a swimmer. She won't drown even if she falls into the sea."
As he spoke, the ship crashed onto a black reef, shuddering violently.
Others tumbled to the deck.
Emma bumped into me,and I flipped over the railing and fell into the ocean.
James didn't notice.
His eyes and heart were only for Emma.
The heavy sea swallowed me whole.
