Ryan and Dr.Reed rushed in.”Ma’am,stop!Respect the dead!”
“Emily,he’s gone—why hit him?”
Seeing them shield Ethan,I lunged at Ava,slapping her furiously.”Look at you, dying at such a young age and leaving our parents and me behind. You unfilial daughter!”
My parents entered,calming me.”Emily,stop. We only have you left. You have to take good care of yourself!”
Ethan and Ava stayed still,enduring the blows.
Their swollen faces eased my rage,but not enough.
I turned to Dr.Reed,voice heavy.”Doctor,Ethan and Ava didn’t contribute much to society.Their deaths shouldn’t be in vain. So,I want to donate their organs to help those in need.And their bodies—to the hospital, for medical students’training.”
“What?”Ryan blurted,horrified.”Emily,you’re crazy!Ethan was a dignified man.Even in death,he deserves a whole body.I won’t allow it!”
“You won’t?”I snapped.”You’re just his friend. It’s not your turn to make these decisions!” I looked to my parents,who nodded.”They’re gone.This is their last chance to do good.Death should mean something.”
Dr.Reed interjected,”We must respect the deceased’s wishes.Ethan was dignified—let him rest with dignity.”
“Dignity?”I countered.”Organ donating internal organs is a glorious and decent thing. It’s the continuation of life! As the attending doctor, why are you so old-fashioned in your thinking! We’re making a contribution to the medical field!”
I pressed,”Your resistance makes me wonder if their deaths are fishy.”
The two of them looked very guilty and stammered, not knowing what to say.After saying these words, I immediately stopped other passing medical staff and explained my intention to them. They brought organ donation forms immediately.
