Chapter 6: Secret Investigation

I sat in my new office, studying the Johnson family files. The Johnsons, the wealthiest family in River City, had businesses spanning real estate, finance, and technology, with years of partnership with Rainwood Corporation. Claire Johnson, the only daughter of the family, a Harvard Business School graduate, currently served as the Vice President of Johnson Holdings. In the photo, she looked stunningly beautiful with an elegant demeanor.
"Researching your romantic rival?"
The sudden voice startled me. Michael Davis had somehow appeared behind me, wearing a mischievous smile on his face.
"It's for work." I quickly closed the page, "Alexander Morgan asked me to investigate the connection between the Jiang family and Chen corporation."
"Is that so?" Michael Davis raised his eyebrows, "Then you should know that Miss Jiang will be visiting our company this afternoon."
My heart tightened: "What?"
"Annual cooperation project review meeting, Miss Jiang will attend in person." Michael Davis handed me a document, "Mr. Morgan wants you to prepare this."
I took the document, which was a detailed analysis of the smart home market. This was Alexander Morgan's test for me, and also an opportunity to showcase my "predictive abilities."
I spent the entire morning preparing, perfectly combining the experience from my previous life with the research from this life, forming a flawless report. When I walked into the conference room, Alexander Morgan was already waiting there, and beside him sat an elegant woman—Claire Johnson.
After the meeting began, I presented my analysis report. When I pointed out the fatal flaw in Thompson's smart home system, Victor Thompson's expression turned grim.
"Miss Lin, are you questioning our technical capabilities?" Victor Thompson held back his anger.
"It's not questioning, it's a factual statement," I said calmly. "Your company's system has serious vulnerabilities in data encryption and backdoor protection. Once it goes to market, it will face enormous risks of privacy breaches."
"What evidence do you have?" Victor Thompson countered.
I smiled as I opened the prepared demonstration file: "These are the security test results for your company's sample product. Within five minutes, one can gain complete control of all devices in a user's home, including cameras."
The meeting room erupted in commotion. Victor Thompson turned ashen-faced, unable to speak. I caught a glimpse of approval flashing in Alexander Morgan's eyes, making my heart race involuntarily.
After the meeting, Alexander Morgan gestured for me to stay behind. Once everyone had left, he walked up to me, standing so close that I could smell the faint scent of cologne on him.
"How did you know about the vulnerabilities in Thompson's system?" He looked straight into my eyes. "That information isn't accessible through regular channels."
"I have my methods." I deliberately kept him in suspense, "What's important is that I helped you avoid a potential business disaster."
Alexander Morgan's gaze deepened: "You are more valuable than I imagined."
His words warmed my heart, but just as I was about to tell him more information about Victor Thompson's plot, his office phone rang.
"Come in," Alexander Morgan said.
Michael Davis walked in and handed him a document. Alexander Morgan quickly reviewed it, then looked up at Michael Davis: "Continue investigating Emily Wilson's background, I need to know how she obtained this information. Focus especially on her past relationship with Victor Thompson."
I stood nearby, my heart breaking. So in his eyes, I was still a suspicious person, someone who needed to be investigated.
"Is there anything else, Miss Wilson?" Alexander Morgan turned to me, as if the previous conversation hadn't happened.
"Nothing else, President Gu." I forced myself to stay calm, "If there are no other instructions, I'll go back to work now."
Leaving the office, I took a deep breath to compose myself. Since he doesn't trust me, I'll give him more reasons to investigate. I'll deliberately leave some mysterious clues, enticing him to dig deeper into my "precognitive abilities." Meanwhile, I'll keep my distance and stop offering information proactively.
Let this CEO who has never been rejected experience the feeling of pursuit for the first time.
