Chapter 27

While I stared in disbelief, Jack twisted the knife further.
"Some people want to be dogs, but they can't even manage that properly!"
I nearly choked on my water, laughing uncontrollably.
Joel's face darkened to an impossible shade.
Still unwilling to give up, he stormed after us.
I tensed, ready to confront him again.
But my mother stepped between us.
"Ma'am, I—"
Joel faltered, suddenly ashamed. After all, he'd allowed his girlfriend to insult my mother terribly.
After a moment, he took a deep breath and tried to explain.
"Ma'am, I'm sorry. Everything was my fault.
I've already dealt with her. If you want a personal apology, I can arrange—"
My mother cut him off coldly.
"How disgusting. How utterly despicable."
She looked at him like something stuck to the bottom of her shoe.
Joel's face fell at her reaction. He opened his mouth to speak but was cut off again.
"Still chasing after my daughter? Know your place, you worthless scum!"
My father stepped forward, joining in.
"Jack told us everything. He pursued our daughter honestly and respectfully.
You humiliated her repeatedly, and now you can't stand seeing her happy with someone else?"
Joel fell silent, his head hanging in defeat.
I had no more interest in this drama. I took Jack's hand and walked away with my parents.
Later, when I next heard about Joel,
it was about his girlfriend causing a scene at his family home, claiming to be pregnant, while his stepmother spread rumors about him abandoning his responsibilities.
But none of that mattered to me anymore.
