Soaking wet, he staggered over to me.
"Sophia, I'm sorry. I guess I deserve this.
I broke up with her. I came to apologize to your parents for what happened.
Could you please—"
Before he could finish, Jack shouted over him.
"Dad!"
"Mom! Let me take you and Sophia out for seafood tonight!"
Joel's face drained of color.
Jack, feigning concern, went over and steadied him.
"Joel, what's wrong? Why so glum?
Oh, I forgot to make proper introductions, given your apparent blindness."
Joel's expression darkened further.
Jack continued cheerfully, clearly enjoying himself.
"This is my girlfriend, Sophia Sullivan, and these are her parents.
They're practically my family now too."
"You bastard!"
Joel lunged at Jack, swinging wildly. I gasped.
Jack easily sidestepped, sending Joel sprawling, then helped him up with exaggerated concern.
"Oh dear, Joel, did you not hear me? Let me repeat myself more clearly."
