But the mystery texter wasn't finished.

"Hey sis, why aren't you answering? Don't you like me?


I'll learn anything you're into, promise. Just one glance my way would be enough."

I blinked rapidly, my cheeks burning. His words made me sound like some femme fatale.

Another message popped up before I could respond.


"You look so cute when you blush. Makes me want to steal you away and keep you all to myself!"

He finished with a string of blushing, rolling emoticons.


I froze, my heart suddenly racing.

Joel had never made my pulse quicken like this, not even once.

But jumping straight to my ex's friend—was that really appropriate?

Even if Joel was a monster! I still had standards to maintain.

As I debated with myself, that irritating voice buzzed in my ear again.

"God, Joel, I need to learn Miss Sullivan's resilience.

If someone talked to me that way, I'd be in tears and halfway home by now."
