Chapter 16

In the study, it was just me and Kael's mother.

She poured me whisky: "I know about you and Kael."

I held the glass nervously, not daring to drink.

"A week's temporary Claim is a trivial matter," she continued. "But I understand you're considering a permanent Mark?"

"Yes..."

"Elara." She fixed me with a penetrating stare. "Do you comprehend the Nightshade Pack's position in our society?"

I nodded silently.

"Kael is the heir. He will become Pack Alpha," she stated. "He requires a strong, well-connected Omega as his Luna."

"And you... a Grey Pack Omega, forgive my directness, simply don't qualify."

I gripped the glass so tightly I feared it might shatter.

"I know I'm not good enough for him," I admitted. "But I..."

"You like him?" She interrupted.

"Yes."

She studied me for what felt like an eternity.

Finally, she sighed:

"Very well. The young must make their own decisions."

"Go. Kael is waiting for you outside."
