Chapter 16

After Sebastian left, I sank onto the sofa, replaying every interaction since Sophia first appeared at the Association.

"When she first saw me, her expression was odd—a mixture of discomfort and smugness, but also something like... guilt? I assumed it was intimidation from meeting a Blake, but now I see it was about Sebastian."

Oro slithered closer. "Of course. They're the same kind, and he was her first love."

"Same kind?" I snatched Oro up, staring into his eyes. "What does that mean?"

Oro looked away, guilt written across his serpentine features. "Find out yourself. I've said too much already."

That night, I snuck into the Association headquarters. The building was quiet except for the night guards. I made my way to the archives and pulled Sophia's file. It was thin, but one detail jumped out: Westwood High School.

I searched online for information about the school. Nothing unusual came up except numerous vampire legends associated with it. Sebastian, a vampire? Impossible—how could a vampire infiltrate the Hunter Association? The thought seemed absurd.

My phone rang, startling me. Dr. Grey.

"Ivy, I'm not sure if I should be telling you this," he said hesitantly, "but I just saw Sebastian with that young woman from the clinic. They're at the Hyde Grand Hotel banquet hall... looking rather cozy."

My chest tightened painfully.

"Dr. Grey," I said, making a sudden decision, "I need your help with something."

"Anything. What do you need?"
