Chapter 16

Luther staggered as the ashtray hit him, and he instinctively loosened his grip. Bright red blood streamed from his head and stained half his face.
Wren's legs buckled in fear as she scrambled to escape, clawing and kicking at the floor. But she didn't get far—Luther grabbed her and yanked her back.
Realizing there was no way out, Wren decided to throw caution to the wind.

"Haven't you done enough, Luther? Two of Callista's children are already dead because of you. Now, you want to kill your third?"
Luther froze as if he was rooted to the spot. Wren then stopped struggling and smiled up at him mockingly.
"What's the matter, Luther Spencer? Now that she's left you, you suddenly want to cherish her?
"Too bad—it's far too late."
Blood continued to drip from Luther's head. The color was stark against his pale, ghostly face. His eyes were hollow as he staggered toward the door.
The moment he left, Wren lunged to lock it behind him. Her phone suddenly buzzed with a notification.

A trending headline showed Jane throwing Wren out of the Spencer residence, alongside the news of Callista's disappearance. So, Callista hadn't come back after all.
A sharp pain twisted in Wren's stomach, and she immediately called for an ambulance. As long as she safely delivered this baby, she still had a chance to secure her position.

Back at Luther's place, he locked himself in the nursery once again. It was the only place where he could feel traces of Callista's presence, the last fragile connection he had to her.

Even so, everything in that room served as a painful reminder that he had destroyed his own child and buried Callista's love for him with his own hands.
Blood dripped onto the table.
Luther panicked and used his sleeve to wipe it away, but the more he wiped, the more blood seemed to pool. It wouldn't stop, and neither would his desperation.
"Cally, please… I can't take it anymore. I can't do this without you. Just give me one more chance. Just one…" he begged aloud.
Luther's back slumped as his words dissolved into choked sobs. His mind wandered to the early days of their relationship.
"Honey, why are you so easy to comfort? Just a box of honey garlic prawns and you're already this happy?" he had teased her once.
Back then, Callista had smiled warmly, but her tone was serious. "I'm easy to please because I still love you. The day I stop loving you, I won't spare you a glance even if you die right in front of me."
Her words had come true. She had left him so decisively and would never come back.
Suddenly, his phone rang. It was Kai. Luther ignored it.
The phone rang again and again, but Luther refused to answer. Eventually, the ringing stopped, only for the sound of knocking to follow soon after.
"Mr. Spencer, Mrs. Spencer's brother is here," someone called out from behind the door.
Luther carefully wiped the table clean and pressed his hand against his bleeding head as he walked out. He was careful not to let any blood stain the room.
In the living room, Kai burst free from the housekeeper's hold and stormed toward him. He grabbed him by the collar.
"Luther, where's Cally? Why are they saying she's missing? Where did you take her?" Kai roared.
Luther could only let out a chuckle at this.
Kai's veins bulged with fury. "Answer me! If you hurt her, I swear I'll kill you! Do you hear me?"
"She left," Luther said while prying Kai's hands off.
"She doesn't want me, and she doesn't want you either. We're both nothing to her now."
"Shut the hell up, Luther Spencer! What nonsense are you spouting? I'll—"
"You know exactly what you did, don't you?" Luther interrupted.
Kai's pupils dilated. Of course, he knew.
Cally hadn't been able to conceive for five years, and the chances of her having a child in the future were slim to none.
Coming from a family as prominent as the Spencers, Luther would never give up on having children.
Kai had thought it would be a win-win solution. They could let Wren bear the child, then give it to Cally to raise so she wouldn't have to endure the pain of IVF treatment again.
For a long time, he believed it was the perfect plan.
Seeing Kai's panicked expression, Luther laughed bitterly.
"Whatever you did, Cally knows now."
