Chapter 10

The sun blazed down on the County Clerk's Office at three in the afternoon. Samuel stood on the steps, his brow furrowed with worry.
Tania was nowhere to be seen.
Lucy, who was standing next to him, sounded overly concerned as she said, "Samuel, do you think Tania doesn't want the divorce? She's always cared about her reputation. How could she just let go of being Mrs. Ferguson?"

Inside, Lucy was torn. She was scared Tania would show up and Samuel might back out, but she was also scared Tania would not come, and she would lose the chance to become Mrs. Ferguson herself — a title she had been dreaming of.
At fifteen minutes past three, the sound of a roaring engine cut through the anxious silence.
A flashy sports car pulled up smoothly in front of the office.
Lucy's eyes lit up. As someone well-versed in luxury brands, she recognized it instantly. It was one of only nine in the world, and it cost over 15 million dollars here in this country.
Without thinking, she let go of Samuel's hand, stepped back, quickly fixed her skirt, smoothed her hair, and put on her best smile.
The man who stepped out of the car was wearing a tailor-made suit and looked every bit the part of a wealthy gentleman, a stark contrast to Samuel's more down-to-earth business vibe.

The man headed straight for Samuel and handed him some papers. "Ms. Russell has asked me to take care of all her divorce stuff."
Samuel looked at the papers with a frown. "Are you her lawyer?"
Elias did not say anything. He just checked his watch. "We should get this done. No time to waste."
He glanced at Lucy, and he could not hide how much he did not like her. Lucy's smile froze on her face.

When Samuel had to sign, he paused, pen in hand.
The moment he touched the paper, his heart felt heavy and sore.
Hadn't he just been talking with Tania about their anniversary? How did they get to signing divorce papers so fast?
He did not really want a divorce. He thought bringing Lucy would make Tania say sorry. He just wanted to teach her a lesson.
Lucy noticed Samuel's pause and whispered, "Samuel, don't wait.”
"Tania's probably with her boyfriend right now. She couldn't even bother to show up for this."
Samuel gripped the pen tight and signed his name without another second's pause.
Then he and Lucy went straight to the County Clerk's Office and got a marriage license.
Lucy could not hide her huge grin when she got the booklet.
They had just left the office when they saw Elias still next to his fancy car.
Lucy fixed her collar and walked up to him. "Excuse me, sir, you look important. Which law firm are you from?
"In the future, the Ferguson family's company might need some legal help. Could you leave us a way to contact you?"
Elias did not even look at her as he said, "Sorry, I'm not a lawyer." He paused, his eyes on the marriage license Samuel was holding, and said with a sneer, "I'm Tania's fiancé."
Then, he turned to Samuel, an icy smile on his lips, "Mr. Ferguson, I hope you enjoy your marriage.”
"Oh, and when you get a chance, take a look at the trending news topics. Tania has left a 'surprise' for you."
With that, Elias got into his car and drove away.
Samuel felt a wave of worry and quickly checked the trending topics on his phone.
The first thing he saw made his eyes hurt.

He scrolled down and saw two more hot topics from the tech world.

On the screen, there was a photo of Tania in a white coat, standing confidently at a podium in front of the world's top experts. She was explaining the details of a new medicine for a genetic disease that affected the Ferguson family.
