"What happened? I heard Brandon was here?"
"He's gone," Nathan answered for me, his hand protectively on my waist.
"He won't be bothering us again."
But my dad's expression was serious.
"Emily, we need to talk. Now."
He pulled me into the study, Mom following close behind.
Once the door was shut, he turned to me.
"Brandon left here furious. He was shouting about destroying this marriage."
Mom took my hands.
"Sweetie, are you sure you know what you're doing? Marrying Nathan is one thing, but provoking the Scotts like this..."
"I didn't provoke him," I said firmly.
"I just stood up for myself, finally."
"But the Scott family's influence in the Valley..." Dad looked worried.
Just then, the study door pushed open. Nathan stood there. "Don't worry about the Scotts. I'll handle it."
His confidence made my dad pause. "Nathan, I know you're capable, but—"
"No buts," Nathan walked in, closing the door.
"I've waited six years for Emily. I'm not letting anyone, especially Brandon Scott, ruin this moment."
He looked at me, the determination in his eyes making my heart race. "You are my wife. I will protect you. Always."
But when his phone rang, and his expression shifted after a glance at the screen, I knew the trouble had already started.
