It had all my chat history with Chloe—thankfully, I'd never deleted any of it.
There were screenshots of all the times, big and small, she'd begged me to cover for her.
The mood in the room shifted.
To be fair, the police started with the easiest thing to verify: the rental situation.
When they pulled the surveillance footage from near the apartment, Chloe's mom smirked at me:
“How did you even get into college? Didn't you know that complex has cameras?”
She completely missed Chloe's near-fainting expression and kept going:
“Not just the complex—the elevators and hallways have them too! If you're on there, you can't deny it!”
I held back a smile.
Of course I knew.
But last time, I was beaten to death before we even made it to the station. I never got to show the evidence.
This time, I'm clearing my name. She can carry her own baggage. I'm not her trash collector.
When the police played the footage, Chloe and her mom turned pale.
I leaned in to take a look too.
The videos clearly showed Chloe entering the complex with a guy, taking the elevator, and him casually unlocking the door.
There was even footage of them making out in the elevator—so clear it was almost embarrassing to watch.
Chloe's mom pointed at the screen in disbelief, shaking her head:
“No! Impossible! That… That's not my daughter!”
I couldn't help but laugh. The footage was so clear you could see the tiny mole on Chloe's chin.
No room for denial.
Her mom stared at her, a flicker of hope still in her eyes:
“Chloe, explain this. You said you were renting with Luna. What is this?”
Before Chloe could try to lie, the police brought in the blond guy from the footage.
With cameras everywhere these days, finding someone isn't hard.
When the guy saw Chloe, he turned on the waterworks right there in front of everyone:
“Babe, I don't know what's happening… I was just watching TV when the police brought me here. You've always been so good to me—you have to help me!”
I facepalmed. Now I got why Chloe was so into this guy.
Before Chloe could respond, her dad charged at him, trying to throw punches. The police stopped him, but the guy was terrified.
He confessed everything.
“We're in a relationship! She's been good to me. I even went to her place over the summer when her parents were away. She got pregnant, but she said we could barely support ourselves, so she looked into loans for an abortion.”
“Don't hit me! I told you everything! We're consenting adults! If you don't approve, we'll break up!”
