He had his lawyer send over revised divorce papers, already signed.
He'd redistributed the assets heavily in my favor – I inherited most of the estate. He was practically penniless.
The lawyer told me it was my compensation.
I didn't ask questions. I signed quickly and efficiently.
On divorce day, we met outside City Hall.
Adrian looked haggard, gaunt, exhaustion etched deep in his eyes.
We had little to say to each other.
But when he looked at me, there was an unreadable emotion in his gaze.
Exiting the building, he seemed to want to say something.
I spoke first. "Goodbye."
His eyes dimmed instantly. His voice was hoarse. "Goodbye."
As I waited for my ride, I saw Chloe Richards arrive to pick him up.
She was beaming, practically skipping, and shot a triumphant glance my way, like she was flaunting her victory.
Adrian's expression darkened the moment he saw her.
He said something sharply to her.
Chloe's tears welled up immediately. She grabbed his arm, refusing to let go.
They struggled against each other, drawing a small crowd of onlookers.
I only caught Chloe's shriek: "Adrian Miller! How dare you treat me like this! You'll pay! I'll expose everything you did to me! I'll show everyone exactly what you are!"
Adrian raised his hand and slapped her hard across the face, yelling furiously.
Chloe fell to the ground.
Her scream nearly shattered the air. "ADRIAN MILLER, I HOPE YOU ROT IN HELL!"
My phone buzzed.
I looked. It was a message from Benjamin.
Attached was a diet plan tailored to my health needs.
Handwritten. Detailed. Meticulous.
I smiled faintly and typed back: Thanks.
