I silently opened my phone, fpulled up the photos, and placed it on the coffee table.
She looked at the phone, her face turning colder. "You followed me? What kind of man are you?"
"We’re not even married yet and you’re already suspicious of everything, maybe it's better to just break up."
She turned and walked into the bedroom.
BANG! The door slammed shut—hard. She couldn’t even be bothered to explain.
Anger and resentment choked my chest. I pushed the door open and walked in. "You're not going to give me an explanation?"
"What’s there to explain? We just had a meal. You're making a big deal out of nothing. Since you followed me, you must know I didn't do anything."
It was true—she hadn’t crossed certain lines. But what she did do left me feeling suffocated and uneasy.
I stared at her. "The man you had dinner with today was Richard Chamberlain, wasn't it?"
"Yes, it was him."
"On Valentine's Day, he gave you flowers and you accepted them. At the time, you said it was just a boss caring for a subordinate."
"I clearly said I was unhappy about you accepting gifts from another man. You promised me then you wouldn't do it again."
"Three months ago, you stayed out all night. You said Richard's child had a fever."
"You said he was divorced and needed a woman to be with the child, that you were just helping out of pity, and promised you'd let me know in the future."
"And now? You lied to me again because of Richard. These are just the times I know about. What about all the business trips you've taken in the last six months?"
"Think whatever you want. My conscience is clear," Sophia said coldly.
"Is it really up to me what I think? How would you feel if you were in my place?"
"I'm tired," Sophia closed her eyes, refusing to speak further.
"I'm a man. I know exactly what Richard is after. I don't want you to be in this situation again."
"It's your mind that's dirty, not everyone else's," Sophia sat up and glared at me. "If it weren't for Richard, could I have promoted so fast in the company? Just one meal and you won't let it go. Is this fun?"
“If you were more capable, would I have to work this hard? Would I have to humble myself in front of others?”
Her voice grew sharper. “You’re not exactly successful yourself, and it’s not like your parents can get me a job. I have to rely on myself—do you have any idea how exhausted I am?"
"A man who earns less than I do—and you have the audacity to question me?"
"I just want to sleep now. Don't bother me."
I was about to speak when her phone rang. She glanced at it, hung up, and walked out holding her phone.
"Was that Richard Chamberlain?"
"A spam call," Sophia replied and went into the bathroom.
