Eyes wide, face pale, she was terrified:
"A deal? Wendy, what do you mean?"
I smiled sweetly: "You forgot who brought the mermaid onboard? Oh, and by the way—his real name is man-eating Siren."
Everything clicked for her.
From me volunteering to check things out, to me suggesting we escape with the mermaid. From the passengers disappearing, to her torture.
She looked horrified: "You planned this. You brought the Siren on purpose, let him eat those people, left me alone with him—you did this to me."
"Why? I'll call the police! I'll call them!"
I frowned: "Don't be a hypocrite. You can scheme, but I can't?"
For trying to escape, the Siren King broke both her legs with his tail.
Her screams filled the apartment.
Good thing no one else lived nearby.
Did the Sirens hunt humans to survive? Maybe. But humans hunt too.
We were on different sides. No right or wrong.
So I kept my word. When the deal was done, I returned the Siren King to the ocean.
His black tail disappeared into the blue waves. He went back to his kind.
It was time for me to return to my life.
