Pale,I clutched my forehead with one hand, the other gently touching my abdomen.
He didn't notice, turning to grab his car keys to take me to the hospital.
Then his phone rang.

One glance at the screen, and he dropped the idea of helping me.
He answered, his expression turning serious, his tone however most gentle.
"Don't be scared.I'm coming now."
He hung up,grabbed the keys, and rushed to the door.
As he was about to go out,I called out,"Ethan."
He didn't stop, his gaze full of disgust.

"Claire,Lila's in trouble."
"Can't you be reasonable for once and stop being such a drama queen?"
One hand on my forehead, the other on my abdomen, the pain was unbearable, but I forced myself to speak.
"I know.I won't stop you from going to her."

"But can you at least call an ambulance for me?I don’t think I can make it."
His disgust deepened, and he snapped,"Claire,to keep me from Lila, you'll lie about anything."
"It's just a little wound on your head. What could happen?"
He slammed the door behind him.
The pain nearly consumed me.I dragged myself toward the dining table.
The short distance felt endless.
By the time I reached it,blood from my body had nearly formed a path behind me.
Biting my lip to stay conscious,I grabbed my phone.
I barely had the time to give my address before passing out.
When I woke up again,it was evening.
The doctor, seeing me awake, asked simple questions, then said,"Ms.Morgan, blood tests show you're six weeks pregnant."
"But the forehead injury caused severe bleeding,so the embryo's unstable now.You need to do something it."
I sat on the bed, stunned, looking at the doctor.
"You're saying I'm...pregnant?"
"Yes.Rest well."
The doctor left, leaving me alone in the vast room.
It took a while to process the news of my pregnancy.
I tried calling Ethan, but,as always, his phone was off.
Giving up,I saw Lila's latest post:
"You're my childhood sweetheart, and my shield forever."
In the photo, she cowered behind Ethan, eyeing a cockroach fearfully.
Ethan stood protectively,arms around her.
This lovey-dovey post drew comments:
"OMG,I'm shipping a real couple!"
"Fighting a roach or showing off?too sweet it’s almost cheesy..."
...
I gave a bitter laugh, abandoning the idea to call Ethan.
Instead,I dialed River City's top divorce lawyer.
"Hello,I'd like file a divorce against my husband..."
By the time I hung up,it was midnight.
Staring at the starry sky,I felt oddly at peace.
A week later,my condition stabilized.
Ethan hadn't called once.
I didn't care,but on the day I discharged myself,he called.
The moment I answered,he scolded me.
"Not coming home?Do you even care about this family?"
I paused,then said,"I'm in the hospital."
He fell silent, clearly forgetting he'd hit my forehead with a vase.
As I moved to hang up,he said,"I'm coming now.Wait there."
I frowned, about to refuse, but he already hung up.
With heave rain outside,I waited in the hospital lobby.
One hour,two hours—he didn't show up.
