Ryan lied.
His cat didn’t say“sister.”
So he called me“sister”all night instead.

Young and tireless,he left me exhausted,my body aching.
Yet he kept going, like an unstoppable beast.
I passed out,drained.
Ethan,meanwhile,was restless,downing drinks.
Seeing Ryan pull me away sparked jealousy.
He wanted to chase me but pride stopped him.

Leaving the hospital,he found Lily’s face dull compared to my vibrant energy.
Tired of her,he ditched her with an excuse and hit a bar with buddies.
“Ethan, you really divorced Maggie? She’s one in a million. You let her go?”
“I wanna meet this caregiver. What kind of goddess made you ditch your wife?”

“Maggie’s amazing.I used to dream she was my wife.”
“Kid,here’s your shot.”
Their chatter grated Ethan.
He smashed a bottle,furious I didn’t beg him to stay,furious another man took“his”woman.
A friend, drunk, egged him to call me.
Ethan scoffed but dialed.
He thought if I pleaded,he’d“graciously”take me back.
The call didn’t go through—I’d blocked him.
Stunned,he borrowed a friend’s phone.
This time,it connected.
“Maggie,I miss you.”
Silence.
Panicked,he blurted,“Come back,or I’ll die in front of you.”
Ryan, watching me sleep,smirked.“Fine.I’ll have a colleague reserve you a spot in the morgue.”
He hung up.
Ethan’s friends gaped, eating up the drama.
Humiliated,Ethan smashed the phone.
He drank heavily, recalling our first nights together.
I’d sleep peacefully, and he’d vow to give me all his love.
When did that promise fade?
He didn’t know.
Waking late,he saw Ryan dressing
Noticing me awake,Ryan grinned.“Like it?Your handiwork from last night.”
He teased again.
I blushed.“Don’t you have work?”
I broke the mood.
He shook his head.“Took the day off to cheer you up.Saw your post about wanting to visit Blue Ridge.Tickets booked.Ready?”
