My roommate,Chloe Summers,picked up the receipt and box,inspecting them.”Looks legit,Sarah.”
Sarah panicked. The other classmates looked at each other and exchanged glances, unwilling to defend her—who’d cover such a pricey loss?
Even her lackey,Tara Blake, didn’t dare to say anything at this moment. Instead, he quietly moved a bit farther away from her, for fear of getting bad luck.
Sarah burst into tears, acting like I bullied her.
Pinching my forehead,I snapped,”How’re you paying?Card,PayPal,or should I call the police?”
At this moment, she stood, scheming.”What if your receipt’s fake?I’ll have it verified.”
I nodded.”Fine.I’ll call the store to collect it and appraise the rest.”
Then I Raised a brow, I added,”You might not have the money, but your CEO boyfriend can cover it,right?”
Her voice shot up.”Of course! He’s a big-shot CEO—$2 million is nothing to him!”
Her hateful glare burned as she grabbed the bag and bolted.
The crowd dispersed, there was no more drama left to watch.
I flopped on my bed,drained.
My phone rang,a cool yet warm voice on the line.”Claire,I’m downstairs.Come down.”
I was stunned, I leapt off the bed, racing out.Chloe called after me,”Claire, where’re you going? Dorm is about to close!” I Waved back excitedly,”Just stepping out!”
The moonlight was bright and clear,Nathan Cole leaned lazily against a tree, his refined face aloof, figure tall and slim in a black coat.
I skipped over, beaming.”What’re you doing here?”
He looked down, tilting his umbrella over me.”Heard someone got wronged at noon.Came to check if she’s crying.”
I huffed proudly.”As if—I’m not that easily shaken.”
He took my hand and said softly,”Claire,I want you to rely on me more.If you’re okay with it,I’d like to be your boyfriend.”
I froze but didn’t pull him away. After a pause,I teased,”What kind of confession is this?No flowers,no fireworks?You need a proper proposal!”
His calm voice sparked with excitement.”You’re saying yes?Wait for me!”
He handed me the umbrella, ready to dash off.I grabbed his hand.”It’s raining—no fireworks. You’re off the hook this time, but you have to make it up to me next time.”
Smiling,I said,”I’ll be your girlfriend.”
He wrapped his arms around my waist, hugging me close, whispering,”Claire,I love you.”
Just as I back upstairs, I saw him standing alone under the tree from the window.I texted Chloe,”I’m not coming back tonight.”
I ran downstairs and hugged Nathan.”Can my boyfriend take me in tonight?”
We met in high school. He’s the same age as me,he lived in Boston before moving to Chicago with his parents. He has a cold personality, but he’s handsome, and all the girls in the class liked him.
The next morning, my phone wouldn’t stop ringing.I groped for it from under the covers.
My mom’s voice bubbled with excitement.”Sweetie, did you get the gift I sent?”
Confused,I mumbled,”What gift? I didn’t get anything.”
She gasped.”No way!I had your dad bring it.He’s back already—I’ll be home in a few days. That bag was custom-designed by their director, with a little surprise for you.”
Her voice made my eyes well up.”Mom,got it.I’ll ask Dad where he put it.”
We chatted fondly for a while before hanging up.
