My eyes stung.I should’ve been angry,but sadness overwhelmed me.
Had Ethan and I fallen this far?
I expected silence or a fight,but he sighed softly.
“Jessica,”he said,“I’ll give you a chance.”
“A chance to prove yourself.”
I didn’t want to play the self-defense card,but I stayed.
Outside the operating room,it was just us.
Rachel’s pained cries echoed.
Her pregnancy was at an advanced stage—miscarriage wasn’t easy.
I thought we’d stay silent,but Ethan spoke abruptly.
“Was it like this in London?”
I blinked.“What?”
“When you miscarried in London,did it hurt this much?”
I snapped back,“So worried about Ryan’s child?”
He looked at me,eyes deep and unreadable.
“Jessica,I care about you,not the child.”
My heart cracked.
I turned away to hide my tears.
Then,a voice interrupted.“Well,Mr.Caldwell,what brings you to this place?”
I looked up,shocked.
Tyler Brooks,dressed like a aspiring playboy,stood with a posse of lowlife punks.
Unlike our Ivy League business school was full of real trust-fund kids,Tyler was an outlier.
His dad struck oil years ago,but their business failed,leaving a shiny shell.
Why was he here?
Noticing my stare,he yelped,“Jessica Lane?!”
“You’re back?”
I glanced at Ethan,and caught off guard.
He explained coolly,“He’s Rachel’s husband.”
What?!
Rachel’s husband?
She married him?
Ethan,seeing my shock,gritted his teeth,“Jessica,did you think Rachel married me?”
A punk whispered to Tyler,who turned to me.“Jessica,you’re vicious.If Rachel is hurt,you’ll pay!”
I was still reeling when the operating room doors opened.
A pale Rachel was wheeled out.The doctor removed his mask.“Who’s the family member?”
Tyler jumped forward.“Me.”
“Baby didn’t make it.Pay the fees,and here’s post-operative care—”
“Didn’t make it?!”
Tyler ignored Rachel,charged at me.“Jessica,that was my first kid.”
He held out a hand.“Five million.Fair,right?”
“Or we’ll see you in court.”
Five million.
He had some nerve.
“Sue away.Let’s see how far you get,Tyler Brooks.”
