"Are you playing me?"
Michael doesn't answer. Instead, he take out an exquisitely wrapped gift box from his pocket. "This is your Valentine's Day gift, belated. I'm sorry. I can't live without you."
"It's impossible for us!" I take a step back. "If you still have feelings for me, then divorce me as soon as possible. Don't buy this kind of stuff again. It's vulgar!"
I don't even need to look to know it is another ring. In our three-year marriage, he gives me a ring every holiday. So stodgy!
He grabs my arm. "Amanda, what do you want? I've already humbled myself, and you still won't forgive me?"
I laugh. "Can't you hold your temper? You know, I heard your phone call on Valentine's Day."
"Also, that night, I went to club too. Guess what I saw?"
Hearing this, he panics and quickly explains, "I was just..."
"You told me you'd be working overtime, and I trusted you. But what happened? Stop yapping. You make me sick!"
I sit on the sofa, cross my legs, and push the prepared divorce agreement toward him.
"I know it not easy to make you sign. I won't back down on the property division. I'll only take what's rightfully mine, nothing more. If you don't agree, I'll make everything public. We'll both go down together."
"Let's see who cracks first—will you hold out, or will I be the one to blink?"
Michael's eyes turned red. "Amanda, can't you tolerate me at all?"
"I just made a mistake that all men would make. All these years, I haven't wronged you. Can't you even tolerate an occasional business entertainment?"
Looking at him, I suddenly feel disgusted. How could I have fallen for someone like him? I laugh.
"Michael, if you admit it was just for show, I might have let it go. After all, everyone has business entertainments."
"But you talk one way and act another—it's utterly contemptible!"
My words make him feel ashamed."Is there really no chance for us?"
"No. You know I can't stand any betrayal. That woman has provoked me several times. I wasn't unaware; I just didn't want to face it. But now I'm tired. Sign the agreement."
Michael knows this time it is completely hopeless. He takes a deep breath and nods."I see. You're really ruthless, Amanda!"
I've always been ruthless. Back then, I fell out with my family for Michael and was determined to marry him.
My father said at that time that Michael looked ambitious, both inferior and arrogant. Once he succeeded, he'd dump me.
I didn't believe it then and thought my father was deliberately belittling him. Now I realize my father was right.
Michael isn't a good partner. Now that I've stepped back, I haven't really lost much. It's just a pity that my three-year love has gone up in smoke.
Michael finally signs the agreement. Our joint property isn't actually that much. I havn't been involved in the company's affairs all these years, but with Ryan's help, I have a rough idea. There is about$30 million in the company's account, and with other assets combined, I get $40 million in the divorce settlement.
With this money, I could live a better life, and besides, my parents' family don't need my money in the first place.
