Perhaps guilt—he sent me large sums monthly.
But I always staying home and miss him,I rarely spent his money.
I’d invested in stocks and earned money.
With the money,I bought a cozy villa with a garden full of flowers.
I settled in,watching shows,tending plants,living comfortably.
But Adam tracked me down and showed up.
He looked at me with exhausted,unshaven and disheveled expression.
“Nora,what’s wrong with you?”
I slammed the door.
He blocked it,his hand caught in the frame.
I heard the crunch and worry about him.
His face paled,bloodless,already frail.
I said urgently:“Are you okay?”
I'm just worried that he might die outside my house.
His eyes lit up:“Nora,I knew you cared.”
He showed me his bruised,swollen hand like a treasure:“Blow on it like before,and it won’t hurt.”
I ignored him and walked into the room.
His eyes sparkled:“Nora,have you forgiven me?Can I come in?”
I shouted back:“Stay out.”
I handed him antiseptic and bandages:“Leave.I’ve done enough.”
Before he could react,I shut the door.
For days,he camped outside,but I didn’t open it.
One day,I heard a rapid knocking at the door.
I knew it was him.
But this time,he held a sharp knife.
His eyes were bloodshot,wild.
“Nora,I know you can see and hear everything.If you don’t come out…”
On the monitor,I saw him press the knife to his wrist and then blood seeping.
Reluctantly,I opened the door.
Seeing me,he stopped,gazing eagerly:“Nora,I knew you couldn’t let me die.”
He was unrecognizable from the composed dean.
In days,he’d changed utterly.
I didn’t know what devotion he was feigning.
I won't fall in love with him as I once did.
My voice was cold:“Adam,what do you want?”
Tears in his eyes,he begged:“Nora,come with me one last time.If you don’t love me after,I’ll stop.”
He shook his head:“No,you’ll love me again.”
I narrowed my eyes:“Fine,let’s go.”
He was very happy and said:“Nora,thank you for giving me a chance.”
He was delusional.
“Not a chance.I just don’t want you dying at my door.”
He ignored me and drived happily, then babbled:“Nora,without you,I couldn’t sleep or eat.I realized how much I love you.”
I dozed off, so I hearing nothing.
When he woke me,I saw our destination and understood.
