My name is Nora Wells. I am a clone, created by Adam Wright. Adam took good care of me and taught me what love meant. I fell deeply in love with him. I never knew Adam had a grander ambition until he once looked at me in regret,
"Your eyes could change the world. They would bring breakthrough for humanity." He wanted to remove my eyes for his research. Even though I feared the pain, I agreed on the removal because I loved him and wanted to support him. The pain was nearly killing me, but the betrayal that followed was even more unbearable. I discovered that my eyes weren’t for science research; they were implanted into his childhood sweetheart, Lily Carter. And Adam wasn’t done. He came to me again, "Lily needs a lot of blood. Only you can help her. As a clone, your blood can regenerate. Losing it won’t endanger your life."
I finally realized that I was made to donate my eyes and blood to Lily. "Adam," I whispered, "If I give away my blood... my love for you might fade." He only offered a faint, dismissive smile, treating my declaration like a child's tantrum. Moments later, he led me into the operating room.
He didn’t know that my love was also cloned, running exactly in my blood. 'My' love for him died as my blood was given away to Lily. ... I stood listening to heavy snow covering the world outside. Adam went to hospital minutes ago. I noticed that his coat had been left on the sofa. Instantly, I grabbed the coat and rushed after him. However, I had to beg directions from strangers and stumbled along the way, relying my cane. I had been blind because my eyes were removed by Adam for his research. Three frozen hours later, I reached his hospital. Adam was the most genius biologist ever. He was now the director of the hospital. A nurse found me helpless in the lobby. Knowing I was coming for Adam, she guided me down the hall. When we arrived at outside the room, the nurse spoke in surprise, "Why do you look exactly like the girl in that room? Are you twins?" I got shocked by the possibility that flashed across my mind. Pain squeezed my chest as a girl’s voice drifted from inside, "Adam, don’t spoil me like this. Nora was my clone... You agreed to marry her for me, didn’t you?" I couldn’t breathe. Right after I gained legal status and earned the ID bearing my name, I begged Adam for marriage. Was it true that he didn’t love me at all? Lily pressed on resentfully, "You should be marrying me, not her..." Adam’s sigh was soft and heavy, "Lily, I grew up with you. You are like my sister. A brother can’t marry his sister. I always wish you to your destined one and have a happy marriage." "Liar," she retorted, "You married her only because you feel guilty. Because you ripped her eyes out... for me." Adam didn’t deny it. Silence hung between them. "Lily..." His voice held a tenderness reserved only for her. The coat slipped from my hand, dropping on the floor. The truth crashed down: I was merely a physical stand-in for that Lily he truly cherished. And Adam had even lied to me to robbed of my eyes for her. Later, in the middle of the night, as I was laying awake beside him, I heard his sleepy murmur, "Lily..." All the pain and the hollow marriage was for Lily, his beloved 'sister'. Ironically, I couldn’t even exist without that girl. I was the clone of her. I wanted to cry but I couldn’t. The eyes I once possessed were now Lily’s. I fled outside into the freezing night when Adam was sleeping. The coldness pierced my clothes, yet panic lent me speed. I ran blindly; fell several times. The howl of the wind was deafening. A metallic tang of blood coated my tongue. Snowflakes settled heavily on me. My thoughts scattered. Half-conscious, I was pulled me back to the sterile lab where it all began. Previous Chapter
