I gripped the bedrail, struggling to sit up.
“I’m going to fine Michael!I don’t believe he’s gone!I need to see him!”I shouted, desperatly trying to get out of bed.
“What are you doing?Stop acting crazy!”Evelyn, startled, tried to stop me,her voice piercing.
“I’m going to Mount Valor.I have to see him,no matter what!”I said,my eyes blazing with resolve and fake grief.
“Enough! He’s dead!Who are you trying to fool?”Evelyn grabbed me,but I shook her off.
“You don’t understand!Michael is my husband.I’ll crawl to that mountain if I have to.He saved my life—if the worst happens,I’ll join him in the snow!”I wailed, hiding my sneer.
You won’t let me go.You know he’s not even there.
“You’re being unreasonable!”Evelyn snapped.“He died to save you.I won’t let you squander his sacrifice!”
“Exactly,Rachel,”Sophia chimed in,avoiding my gaze.“Don’t waste Michael’s sacrifice.”
“I’m going now.You can’t keep me here forever.I am going to see my husband!”I stood firm.
The other patients were moved.
“She’s a good wife.No way she meant to harm him.”
“They must’ve been deeply in love. What a tragedy”
“Let her go!”
Tears streamed as I soaked in their sympathy,my heart ice-cold.
In love?Disgusting.
“You—”Evelyn started,but I cut her off.
“Enough! Why are you stopping me?Do you have something to hide?”I said casually, watching them squirm.
“Hide?What could we hide?”Evelyn stammered.
“Then it’s decided.I’m going.Try and stop me.”I glared,limping toward the door.
“You…ugh!”Evelyn fumed but couldn’t argue after my jab.
Sophia’s face twitched with panic, then calmed. She stepped forward, grabbing my arm.“If you're so determined to see where Michael died,I’ll go with you.”
She turned to Evelyn.“The mountain’s dangerous. Can you arrange for professionals to guide us?”
Evelyn nodded eagerly.
I knew they were planningto have Michael stage his“death”again for my benefit.
Perfect. They were falling right into my trap.
