Of course,I had been too good to him in my previous life,so good that he thought I couldn't live without him.Maybe he believed my unusual behavior today was just jealousy, trying to get his attention.
What an arrogant jerk!
"Get your crap off my doorstep,or I'll report you for disturbance!"
I slammed the door,ignoring him.
Ethan,furious,called me to threaten.
"Don't push your luck. This matter will be pinned on you no matter what!"
"If you cooperate, and the restaurant might compensate you.Otherwise, don't blame us for being ruthless!"
I blocked all his contact information.
Let's see how they'd pin this on me.
The next day,Ms.Harper called, saying I could resume work.
Something was fishy,but I went.
For safety,I bought pinhole cameras.
In the meeting room,Ms.Harper sat regally,Claire sobbing like a victim.
Seeing me,Ms.Harper handed me a contract.
"Sophie,we'll transfer Claire, and you can stay as the chef."
I frowned,scanning the contract.
"But you'll need to cooperate with the investigation to appease the victims'families."
I nearly laughed.
The poisoned child had a weak constitution.Though saved,he'd suffer long-term effects.
His wealthy family refused mediation, vowing to jail the culprit.
Ms.Harper wanted me to take Claire's prison sentence!
I tore the contract.
"Stop dreaming. No one will go to jail for her!"
Claire wailed.
"Why should I go to jail?I've never suffered in my life. Can't you just spend two years in prison?"
"I messed up,but you didn't remind me!I'm already transferred—what more do you want?"
I sneered,"You deserve the transfer. What's it to me?"
"Your mistake nearly killed a child, and you want me to take the fall?No way!"
Ethan said coldly,"It's just two years. You can come back to work after.Claire's young—think of her!"
I smirked at him."If you care about her so much, you take her sentence. You're the head chef."
He grabbed my collar,furious."What nonsense!"
I slipped a camera onto his clothes.
"You won't do it,so why should I?Ethan, you're disgusting."
Ms.Harper slammed the table."Enough!If we can't agree,leave!"
Ethan snorted,releasing me.
I'd gotten what I needed.Time to wait.
Their threats would be courtroom evidence.
At home,I opened my laptop. The camera feed crackled, then cleared.
Claire was still crying.
"Mom,Ethan,what do I do?Will I really go to jail?"
"Panic for what?"Ms.Harper sneered."She has to take the fall whether she likes it or not!"
Ethan soothed,"Don't worry,Claire.I won't let you go to jail."
"I've got a plan—just wait."
Ms.Harper looked at Ethan approvingly.
"Once this is over,I'll approve your marriage."
I sneered. So Claire and Ethan had been at it for a while, already planning marriage.
Scum and trash—perfect match.Saves them from harming others.
Three days later, the child's parents stormed in,demanding answers.
Claire, smug, clung to Ethan's arm, both eyeing me like a beaten dog.
The camera only worked once,so I didn't know their full plan.
Whatever came,I'd handle it.
I had the food test report—ironclad evidence.They couldn't win.
Ethan dragged me to the parents, forcing an apology.
"Sophie, admit your mistake now,and you might get a lighter sentence."
I broke free.
"Watch your words.I could sue you for defamation.."
Ethan's confidence meant he had a trump card.I needed to figure it out.
"Want evidence?Fine!"
He pulled out a food test report.
"Thought destroying footage would stop us?We tested the food right after—loaded with nitrites!"
I sneered,"Think before you speak.Claire's the procurement staff.Even if it's nitrites,it's not on me."
