An hour later, Daniel sent a chat log:
"Nathan and Samantha are suspended. Samantha's been called back to the Pierce estate. Nathan's probably'coming back from his trip'soon."
I smiled. Perfect—he needed to be here to" kill" me.
That afternoon, Nathan returned, laden with supplements—most seals tampered with, likely spiked.
"Honey, why're you back early?" I signed.
He looked haggard but forced a smile." Knowing you're pregnant, I couldn't focus. Wrapped up in Miami and rushed back. Took a month's leave to be with you."
Sure. More like he had no job now.
I eagerly unpacked his" gifts", then, unsurprisingly, found another insurance policy in his bag.
This time, the beneficiary was" Nathan Harper."
"What's this? Who's Nathan Harper?"
"Silly, that's our kid", he signed, beaming like a doting dad.
"Last policy was a misstep. This one's for our child. Now you won't doubt my love, right?"
I stared. Was he planning to wait until the baby was born to kill me, then claim the money as the child’s guardian?
A baby could" tragically pass" from neglect—how convenient.
"Emily, still worried?" he signed, seeing my silence." It's just savings. Bank interest is trash—insurance grows faster."
"But the kid's not born yet. Can this even work?"
"Trust me, I know people at the insurance company. It's doable."
"Fine." I signed it swiftly.
…
I was kidnapped in my own home.
This life, my" pregnancy" pushed Samantha too far, especially with Daniel dropping hints she didn't resemble the Pierces.
She couldn't wait to act.
I woke up tied to a chair, with Nathan and Samantha looming over me.
"Sammy, Nathan, why are you doing this?"I signed.
"Why?!"Samantha shrieked, forgetting to sign."If you hadn't brought that damn tea, Nathan and I wouldn't—"
Oh, she blamed me for their ruin.
"You wouldn't be in trouble if you weren't cheating," I said aloud.
"You—you can hear?!"Samantha gasped." Since when?"
"When you said'Drop the insurance—she can't live'," I replied.
"So you knew about us..."
"You set us up!"
"You bitch! You ruined us!"
