His face flushed with indignation,as if he felt my injustice.
“Honey, you’re out so soon?Don’t worry about the company—Victor’s helping me.”
Fiona reached for my hand, all tenderness.
I scoffed,dodging.“What,I can’t come?If I hadn’t shown up,I wouldn’t know you’d kicked me off my post,Ms.Carter.”
She gave an awkward laugh, pulling me into her office.“Victor needs experience.Let him try. You’re older—mentor him.”
The office door opened, revealing my designs trashed and reworked.
The decor was everything I hated, all in Victor’s taste.
A row of$50,000 figurines lined up near the desk.
My carefully tended plants were gone.
“Where are my plants?”
I glared at Fiona,stern.
She clung to my arm.“Victor said they were stealing oxygen from the air.The bathroom’s better for them.I figured they’re just common plants,so I let him.”
“If you like them,I’ll buy you better ones.”
I glared at her,furious.
She let out a sigh.“Fine,I’ll have them moved back from the bathroom. But not here—Victor’s still learning, needs your guidance.Honey, help me out.Be his assistant, train him.”
I couldn’t believe her shameless request.
I laughed in anger.Victor, who had returned unnoticed, saw me in what was now his office and grinned.“Evan, you’re back!”
Fiona left for a meeting, leaving us alone.
Victor stopped pretending, lounging on my handpicked leather sofa.“Evan, when are you leaving?”
“Can’t you see Fiona doesn’t love you? If she cared about you, would she have tricked your dad into signing the settlement and given me the keys to your marital home for my parents?”
“Evan,you should divorce her.She doesn’t love you!”
My clenched fist loosened.I set the divorce papers on the desk.
He stared,then spoke.“What’s this?”
“You know better than anyone if Fiona will divorce me.Why else use subtle manipulation to push me?”
“Here’s your chance. If you can make her sign, I’ll leave and go somewhere she’ll never find me.”
Victor’s eyes sparkled with greed, wary of tricks.
I turned to go.
He called out,“You’d really divorce Fiona?Give her up?All that wealth?”
I stood silently,my mind clearer than ever.
“It’s in your hands.Make it happen.”
I didn’t answer,just left.
I handed Victor not just the divorce papers but my resignation.
Back then, top firms tried to recruit me—a top university grad who secured major deals for Carter Enterprises.I stayed for Fiona.
I poured my youth and talent into her and her company, only to be kicked aside like a pebble.
What she didn’t value,others would.Leaving Carter Enterprises wasn’t a loss!
