Chapter 123 Attempted Escape

It felt like we stepped into a freezer the moment we entered the lab. Janice was waiting for us by a tank of water. Beside it was a long, steel table with all kinds of equipment, vials of liquids and syringes ready.

She snapped on a pair of thin, rubber gloves and turned to face us, smiling. "Glad to see you're all fed and ready for the next experiment. But," her eyes darted toward the man who escorted us here. "I just need her." Janice pointed at me. "And the boy."

My heart began to beat faster. I peered at Aria, as the man grabbed her and Belinda by the arm and led them out.

She gave me a faint nod. I wanted to nod back, but Janice was watching me and she would notice. The damn hag didn't seem to miss a thing.

I forced myself to glance away from them, praying our plan would work. We didn't officially agree on when I would follow through with our plan, but if they were literally bringing Kayn out then I was going to do it. Who knows when I would get another opportunity?

I swallowed, eyeing the tank. "What's that for?"

"Exactly what you think it's for," she breathed, picking up a syringe and a clear liquid. She drew it out, the tapped the syringe. I slowly backed, then froze when she rolled up her own sleeve and stabbed herself with it.

I gaped at her. "What are you doing?"

"For me to know," she clucked her tongue, dropping the used syringe into the trash dispenser. "And not for you to find out."

I heard Kayn before I saw him. There was shouting and shuffling coming from outside the hallway. A thud and a groan, then, "I need help over here!"

One of the lab coats shouted. I decided to call them that since I grew tired of trying to remember their names.

There were just too many of them.

"Steady down," another man yelled. Something crashed. "Knock it off!"

The man followed with a slew of curses and Janice frowned. "Well, that boy is a lot harder to handle than you girls. Glad I'm not the one who has to deal with him."

When she noted my questioning look, she added. "Doctor Michaels. He's the other head of this company, beside me. Looks like the serum is wearing off already," she sang, sounding amused.

"What serum?" I asked, my heartbeat growing louder inside my ears. "What are they doing to him?"

"Relax," she sighed. "Just something for him to relax."

"He doesn't sound relaxed," I ground out.

A steel table on wheels flew down the hallway past our room and crashed into a wall, leaving the table bent in half. I muttered a curse, moving for the door.

Janice grabbed my arm. "And where do you think you're going?"

I tried to fight off her grip, but she only dug in her nails deeper. "Please, I can help. Let me help calm him down. He'll listen to me. Before someone gets hurt!"

She considered it for a moment, before releasing me. "I hope for your sake you're right."

I dashed out of the room to find Kayn pinned to the floor, while fighting off five men, and it looks like he might win until a sixth man approached with a syringe.

"No!" I shouted. "I've got this. Don't!"

The man paused, eyeing me with a frown and Kayn stopped fighting, turning his head slightly to peer at me.

"Let her," I heard Janice say behind me. The man with the syringe nodded, backing away from Kayn. The others released him, and he was instantly on his feet and rushed toward me.

My body shuddered as I exploded in sobs the moment his arms wrapped around me and he crushed me to his chest.

A deep, annoyed sigh sounded behind us, no doubt Janice.

Well, screw her.

"I'll get us out," he whispered against my ear. "I don't care how, but I will. I promise you."

"Aria is here," I whispered back. "I've talked to her. She's okay. Belinda too."

Kayn stiffened. "She's…really here?"

"Yes." I held onto him tighter. "We've got a plan to escape. You need to manipulate the security system…So they don't see us g out. I've got one of their cards to swipe the door."

"I can do that. When?"

"When they leave us alone," I said. "I don't know when—"

"All right. That's enough," Janice said. "Come. Or do I need to sedate you two? What will it be?"

Kayn briefly brushed his lips with mine before he released me, scowling at Janice. "What do you want?"

"Come, follow me," she nodded toward the lab and walked in without checking if we followed her.

Kayn grabbed my hand, holding on with a grip of steel as we trailed after her.

Janice waves at us to each take a seat. When we did I was forced to let go of Kayn's hand, but he didn't shift his eyes from me, almost as if he was afraid if he'd glance away I'd dissapear.

A sadness tugged at my heart and I turned my attention back to Janice. She had straps in her hand. She walked toward Kayn first, and he actually let her tie him to the chair.

But we both knew that wouldn't keep him there if he decided he wanted to break free. I almost snorted.

"You really think that is necessary?" I asked.

Janice ignored me, turning to tie me to my chair. "Fine then," I mumbled under my breath.

She turned away once again, picking up a scalpel from the table. Both Kayn and I stiffened in our seats.

"What are you going to do with that?" he asked, as Janice headed straight for me.

Too calm she shrugged. "Just going to see how much truth there is in your girlfriend's claim of that bond thing you have."

I shook my head, panic rising inside my chest. "You already had a confirmation. You don't need to do this."

"I need it on record." The moment her hand clasped around my arm, Kayn snapped loose from his chair and dragged her off me, throwing her back onto the table behind her.

He didn't say anything as Janice groaned in pain, and he turned to rip off the straps from my arms. "This is our chance," he breathed. "The hell if I let her touch you."

I peered anxiously at Janice, who seemed to be having a hard time getting up. I nodded at Kayn, my heart pounding inside my ears. "Let's go."

Kayn pulled me onto my feet and led me out of the lab as Janice shouted something from behind us. Whatever it was got faded by popping noises Kayn made each camera explode above us. He seemed to know exactly where we were going, steering me after him. We paused by a large door and he peered at me. "The card?"

I nodded, pulling out the card strapped to my stomach by my waistband and swiped it. Shouting and feet pounding somewhere down the halls could be heard as we waited for the door to open. I cursed as it beeped, the light turning red.

Kayn grabbed the card, swiping it. Rejected. "Come on," he cursed, trying again. He kicked the door, trying for a fourth time, when, "Turn around or I will shoot her."

I laid on the floor, staring blankly at the grey wall, feeling hopeless and broken. After they captured us, they tortured us with more tests.

Janice had stabbed that scalpel in my arm seven times. My bandaged arm lay beside me, but the pain was gone. I couldn't feel it, only the ache left inside my chest.

They had separated us all. Each dumped inside a cold holding room with no windows and a mattress.

I chose the floor.

I didn't want the stupid mattress and refused to eat anything they provided us since then.

It had been two days. The hungry burn inside my stomach had dulled to something else.

I knew I should eat, or it would kill Kayn too. I didn't want him to hurt or let him suffer.

But…

There's just no hope in me left.

I got jarred awake by a loud bang. When my eyes flung open, the room was pitch dark. I didn't know where I was. If I was still in my holding room, or somewhere else, I couldn't tell.

I was still on the floor, that much I could tell.

I got up and crawled into the direction of where I remembered the mattress was, and sure enough, knocked into it. I sat on it, perking my ears to get an indication of what was going on.

A click sounded and my heartbeat picked up. I didn't say anything or dared to move. Until, "Carly? Where are you?"

A mixture of a gasp and a cry escaped me, and I shot up onto my feet. "Rake? Is that you?"

"Yeah. Where are you?" I heard him say. "Do you know how hard it is to find—oh for heaven's sake, old man. I need the bloody torch. I can's see crap in here!"

"Hector is here too?" I couldn't hold back the sobs.

"Yeah…" Rake breathed sounding uncomfortable. "Just don't get teary on me, please. Save it for your boyfriend or—"

"Is she in there?" I heard Kayn ask.

"I'm here!" I cried out, ignoring Rake muttering under his breath.

There was a shuffling of movement and a clang of metal, followed by more cursing. "Who cares about manners," Rake snorted in annoyance. Not a moment later, arms wrapped around me.

"They came for us," Kayn said, and I could tell by the tone of his voice he might cry too. "They found us."

"Where's everyone?" I managed through the sobbing. "What about Aria? And Belinda? Janice and her staff?"

"They're all taking a nap," Rake answered as a light suddenly fell on him and he cursed for what could be the hundredth time in a span of a few minutes. "Turn that damn light down!"

"Aria and Belinda is with Ember," Kayn said. "They're all safe."
