Chapter 107 Something Wicked

"Are you sure we are being followed?" he asked. "Maybe you're just on edge and think—"
"He's from the AOUB," I insisted, my eyes scanning everything around us. More particularly, focusing on the corners and spots someone could hide behind. "His suit had a symbol on the jacket. The ones I've seen wear at the headquarters."
"Hmm," Kayn responded thoughtfully. "Maybe we should lure him out?"
"What do you mean?" I peer up at him. "And do what then?"
"Well, we get him in a secluded area and beat him up until he tells me where my sister is."
I snorted. "Doesn't mean he knows. My mom works for the AOUB and doesn't have a clue what half of the place stands for."
"Fine, then." He kept peering back toward the bench where Martha usually sat as if he was hopeful she'd spontaneously appear or something.
"Where else do you think your grandpa would go?"
"Just here," he breathed. "As I said, he never ever leaves the island."
"Not even in an emergency?" I asked. "Have you tried the hospitals?"
"He wouldn't go to them for medical care," Kayn looked at me. "We have our own doctors, you know, in case we sprout a tail on the bed. Imagine the shock of a human doctor if that is the case."
"Okay," I sighed. "Now what do we do?"
"We go check on Ember and Rake."
"No, Kayn," I scowled at him. "You promised you won't stir any trouble."
"And I won't," he said. "We can watch them from a distance. You know, make sure there isn't any trouble."
I snorted. "Forget it. Let's just go back."
"And then what?" he asked. "Sit and worry about the fact that none of my family members is in a safe situation?"
"Potentially not safe," I corrected. "There is always a first for everything. For all you know, he's already back on the island. As for Ember, she's perfectly fine, relax, okay?"
"I need a distraction," he insisted. "This is going to drive me out of the walls."
"Then let it. You're not going to ruin your sister's chance of happiness." I crossed my arms, glaring up at him. I knew he was more bothered over what Ember was doing than where Hector was. "I can see that look. No. Just no."
"Let's just—"
"No," I snapped, taking hold of his hand and urging him to follow me. "Let's just get out of here and do something productive that doesn't involve your sister."
"Like what?" I could feel his mood perk.
"I don't know," I said. "But we can find something to do. Besides, if the AOUB is following us—"
"Which is old news by the way."
I rolled my eyes. "I don't care. It's uncomfortable knowing that."
"They already know about us too."
"I know," I sighed. "When's the last time you painted? Maybe you could teach me?"
He stopped dead, eyeing me with a suspicious look. "Why are you trying so hard to get me away from Ember? Is there something you're hiding?"
"No," I deadpanned. "I just don't want you ruining her day."
"That's the only reason?"
"No," I admitted. "I could use a distraction myself."
A smile cracked on his face and he grabbed my hand again, tugging me after him. "Then say no more."
