Chapter 120

Kate looked at me as though my question had caught her off guard and I suppose it had. But as groggy and hurt as I felt, it was indeed a question that boggled my mind.
My next of kin wasn't Kate, it was my beta Jackson. And I knew Jackson could not have called her and told her about the fact that I was in the hospital.
So, someone must have told her about it. But the question was who?
"you aren't responding, Kate." I groaned out and she continued to dawdle,
"I found out." she finally said and I glared at her,
"I am very aware of the fact that you found out. You would not be here if you hadn’t. However, it is how you found out that I am interested in knowing. So tell me, how it is that you found out?"
She looked at me for the longest time until she finally shrugged, and I looked away,
“You won’t say anything then.” I said suddenly weary of pushing her for the truth. It clearly wasn’t coming,
“I don’t think you would approve of my method of finding out about this particular situation.”
“I see. Are you stalking me then?” I asked somewhat calmly and turned to look at her and the way her eyes widened gave her away. Sometimes, it was easy to know when Kate felt cornered. I’m not sure if she knew it, but she could be very transparent with her expressions.
“I wouldn’t say that … exactly.” She said and I rose a brow,
"I won’t push on this matter any longer, as what’s done is done. But Should it be that you are following me, or have people who do, I will advise you to stop it right away. Because, should I ever get wind that you have persisted in this abhorrent behavior, I will break the neck of those who pay service to you before I finally decide what I'm going to do with you." I said with a tone of finality
"This isn’t necessary. In the end, I’ve only done all that I do in the name of my love for you. You don't have to be so brutal." she finally said in a quiet voice,
"Trust me Kate, You haven't seen anything brutal yet," I said and closed my eyes. It took every ounce of my energy to converse with her, and it had very little to do with my accident.
"fine then. In any case, I brought you some food. Just in case you're of the mind to eat." I watched her as she dug out a plate from a thermos bag and squinted at her,
"I'm not hungry. But you can help me out by calling Jackson. I have some things to discuss with him."
"he's outside."
"great. Call him in. Then you can go home and rest."
"Did I say I wanted to go to rest? I want to stay with you."
"There will be no need for that." I said and struggled to stand up, "I'll request the discharge form as soon as I'm completely healed. You have a sore ankle to deal with. Tell the driver to take you home."
"but-"
"Now, Kate," I said in my Alpha voice, and she stood there looking helplessly before she finally conceded.
"Fine then," she said and looked like she would have fought me tooth and nail. I would have fought right back, but was glad neither of us had to do that.
"What did you do to that woman? She looks like she wants to break something." Jackson asked when he entered my ward and I just shrugged,
"I asked her to go home and tend to her hurting leg. And you, I need you to process my discharge. As soon as possible. I need to leave this dreadful place."
"But, Alpha, you're still a bit sore," he said, looking at me like he was worried,
"I'll heal on the way home." and began to get off the bed when I heard a knock on the door,
"Come on in," I called out, thinking it was the doctor, but when the door opened up, lo and behold it was Ember.
"Em?" I asked in surprise and she nodded,
"I'm sorry, I should have come sooner." she said stepping further into the room, "had to deal with a couple of things. But are you okay?"
"am I- well, Not exactly. I think I broke a couple of things. The doctor kept me here on observation. But I should leave." I said in a weak voice and caught Jackson's look of surprise. completely ignored it.
"I don't know if to apologize or thank you since you actually saved my life. But it's my fault that you're in this position."
"You can thank me, as I'm not particularly sorry for the role I played."
She nodded slowly and kept her eyes on me, "thank you." she said and I shrugged,
"I'd do it again," I said, softly, and she shook her head,
"I hope you won't ever have to."
"Why didn't I leave you two alone," Jackson said and I turned to him, suddenly remembering he was there,
"That would be okay," I said and he gave a salute before leaving.
"sooo.. How exactly do you feel?" she asked when Jackson was gone, and I shrugged heavily,
"I can't say for sure. Of course, I'm healing. But just a bit sore, I guess."
"Sorry about that," she said awkwardly and I thought she looked cute right then,
"It's alright. Don't worry so much about it."
She sat on the couch and looked at me carefully, "what were you doing at my company anyway?" she asked, and I scratched the back of my head,
"I had come to see you. I decided in my head, that I had stayed away from you for long enough, and decided to just drop by. Make you hear me out. I waited until your work hour was over, and then I saw that metal rod dangling over you I guess you know everything else from that point."
"Yes I suppose I do." she said, sounding lost in thought, "although it's mightily beyond me what that chunk of metal was actually doing there in the first place."
"I guess you might have to look into it at the company. Because it seems a bit suspicious to me." I said, and she shrugged,
"I haven't given it much thought. But yeah, I guess it's a bit odd for it to have been there," she replied, and I nodded.
"Do you need help?" she asked when I tried to get off the bed, and I looked at her before nodding a bit,
"That would be nice," I replied.
She sighed and got up, before slowly walking toward me. Then putting an arm around my middle, I put an arm around her shoulder and let her lift me up, wincing here and there, to add to the drama.
"Does it hurt so bad?" she whispered, and for a moment I forgot to reply, I was too stuck on how she felt close to me. Since she rejected me, she had kept her distance. The only time she willingly touched me was when it seemed like we would have a chance during her project.
But now, she held on to me, and she wasn't stiffening or treating me like vermin to be walked over. It felt really nice.
She tightened her grip when my feet touched the ground, and carefully put my weight on her.
"Where do you want to go?"
"the bathroom," I said. I might have been displaying a lot of drama to gain Ember's sympathies, but my need to use the bathroom was actually real and I wondered how far she was willing to go in helping me out here.
But then again, I thought if he chose to follow me into the bathroom it wouldn't be largely crazy as we were once married after all.
"almost there," she said gingerly, and we were almost there when she tripped over a rope, and it was completely reflex, how I caught her before she tripped over, and held close to me with every ounce of strength that was within me.
And it took only a second after that event was over for me to realize the terrible mistake I had just committed,
"what is this?" she asked, pushing me away, and her brows were drawn in anger, "this was all an act? You were pretending?!"
"I, well, I wouldn't say I was pretending…”
"you don't ever change. I see your beloved Kate has influenced you greatly. Two peas in a pod. Look how you both fit each other like a glove."
"Now, Em, don't be like that," I said, trying to reach out to her, but she stepped away from me,
"don’t touch me. Don't you dare touch me!"
And just like that, we had gone several steps backward in our almost non-existent relationship.
