Chapter 34

"Now I'm choosing to be brave," I said. "To fight for justice, for Lily... and for us."
The last word hung between us, full of promise and possibility. Nathan's eyes searched mine, asking a silent question. In answer, I rose on my tiptoes and pressed my lips to his.
Unlike our tentative kiss days ago, this one held nothing back. It was a declaration, a promise, a homecoming. His arms tightened around me, pulling me closer, and I melted into him, feeling for the first time in eight months that I was exactly where I belonged.
When we finally broke apart, both breathless, Nathan rested his forehead against mine. "I love you, Olivia. I never stopped, not for a single day."
"I love you too," I whispered, the words both terrifying and liberating. "I think I always will."
As evening fell, we sat on the deck overlooking the lake, the evidence gathered and ready to be delivered to the authorities the next day. Whatever came next—the legal battles, the public scrutiny, the confrontation with Victor—we would face it together.
And for the first time since that terrible night eight months ago, I felt truly whole. Not because the pain had disappeared or the scars had faded, but because I had finally found the courage to embrace life again, with all its risks and possibilities.
Nathan's arm around my shoulders was warm and secure, a tangible reminder that I was no longer alone. That I never had to be alone again.
"What are you thinking about?" he asked, pressing a kiss to my temple.
I smiled, leaning into his embrace. "The future. Our future."
"And what does that future look like?" he asked, his voice soft with wonder.
"I'm not entirely sure yet," I admitted. "But I know it includes you. And maybe, someday, Lily too."
He tightened his arm around me. "That sounds perfect to me."
As the stars began to appear in the darkening sky, I felt a sense of peace I hadn't experienced in longer than I could remember. The road ahead would not be easy, but with Nathan beside me and the truth as our weapon, I was ready to face whatever came next.
Olivia's POV
The courthouse steps were crowded with reporters, their cameras flashing as we made our way toward the entrance. Nathan's hand was steady at the small of my back, a reassuring presence amid the chaos. Six weeks had passed since we'd turned over the evidence against Victor Carter—six weeks of legal proceedings, public scrutiny, and private healing.
"Dr. Carter! How does it feel to face your father-in-law in court today?" a reporter called out.
"Mr. Carter! Will you testify against your own father?" shouted another.
Nathan guided me through the crowd without responding, his face set in the impassive mask he wore in public these days. Only I knew the emotional toll this was taking on him—the sleepless nights, the moments of doubt, the weight of confronting the man who had raised him.
Inside, the courthouse was mercifully quieter. Our lawyer, Diane Mercer—formerly Carter Developments' CFO before she resigned in protest of Victor's actions—met us in the hallway.
"Ready?" she asked, her expression sympathetic but determined.
I nodded, smoothing down my navy blue dress. "As ready as I'll ever be."
"Remember," Diane said, "just tell the truth. Your testimony about the medical complications, combined with the evidence Rebecca provided, is compelling. The jury needs to hear it from you."
