"He's always like that," said Jeremy from Accounting during lunch. "Cold, distant, robotic. The man's a machine."
"Hmm," I sipped my coffee. "Interesting machine."
I'd done my research. The full moon had been two days ago—the day I started. I knew Alphas were naturally good at controlling themselves—I’d heard stories about some who lost control during the full moon, but I never imagined I’d witness it firsthand.
I cornered his assistant that afternoon. "When's the best time to catch Morris? We need to discuss the Henderson account."
She looked nervous. "He's... not feeling well today."
"Is he in his office?"
"Yes, but—"
I was already walking away. "Thanks, I'll be quick!"
This time, I knocked properly. No answer. I knocked again.
"Go away." His voice sounded strained.
"It's Noah. About Henderson."
Silence. Then: "Not now."
I should have left. Instead, I opened the door.
Morris was standing by the window, back to me, knuckles white as he gripped the frame. The office smelled like a forest after rain.
"I said not now." He didn't turn around.
"Are you a werewolf?" The words left my mouth before my brain could stop them.
He spun around so fast I stepped back. His eyes—normal now—widened in shock before narrowing dangerously.
"Excuse me?"
I closed the door behind me. "Three days ago. I saw you. The eyes, the... changes."
"Get out." His voice was deadly quiet.
"No." I stepped closer. "I'm curious by nature, Morris. And you're the most interesting thing I've encountered in years."
"I could fire you."
"You could. But then I might get chatty about what I saw."
His jaw clenched. "Are you blackmailing me?"
I laughed. "God, no. I'm flirting with you."
That caught him off guard. His perfectly composed face cracked with confusion.
"You're insane," he finally said.
"Probably. But you're a werewolf, so who's really the weird one here?"
For a moment, I thought he might throw me out the window. Instead, the corner of his mouth twitched—almost a smile.
"You have no idea what you're getting into, Kingsley."
I grinned. "That's what makes it fun."
