Chapter 1: Secrets Under the Moonlight

Luna Grey's POV

My fingertips had gone numb in the cold water, but I continued scrubbing the Alpha family's clothes until each piece emanated the scent of pine soap. Moonlight streamed through the broken roof of the barn, casting a mysterious glow on my heterochromatic eyes. I am Luna Grey, the only werewolf in the Moon Shadow Pack with one blue and one green eye, and the only omega who could shift before turning eighteen.

But no one knew this secret. No one knew my true identity.

"Luna, aren't you finished yet?" Victoria's sharp voice, the Alpha Richard's daughter, came from outside the barn. "Tomorrow is the coming-of-age ceremony, and I need my red dress!"

I clenched my teeth, suppressing the anger within me. "Almost done, Victoria."

"Remember your place, omega," she sneered. "Don't think you'll find a mate at tomorrow's ceremony. The Moon Goddess wouldn't bless worthless creatures like you."

I lowered my head, feigning submission, but my wolf—Selene within me—let out an angry growl.

'One day, we'll make her kneel before us,' Selene said in my mind.

'Patience,' I soothed her, 'Father said the time isn't right yet.'

After Victoria left, I quickly finished the laundry and hung the wet clothes on ropes strung across the barn. Tomorrow, I would turn eighteen. In werewolf tradition, this meant I would officially come of age, with the opportunity to find my mate at the joint gathering of the two packs. Though as an omega, I was told I had no right to a mate, deep down I knew differently.

I stepped outside the barn, letting the cool night air caress my skin. The full moon hung heavy in the sky, its silver light bathing the world in an ethereal glow. Something about tonight felt different—a tension in the air, a whisper of change carried on the breeze. I closed my eyes and tilted my face toward the moon, allowing myself a rare moment of peace.

"What would it be like," I whispered to the night, "to find someone who sees me for who I truly am?"

The thought of a mate—someone bound to me by forces beyond understanding—sent a shiver of longing through my body. In my dreams, I'd imagined him countless times: strong but gentle, fierce yet kind. Someone who would look at my mismatched eyes and find beauty instead of strangeness.

"Daydreaming again?" a gentle voice interrupted my thoughts.

I turned to see Elder Willow standing nearby, the only elder in the pack who showed me kindness. Her aged face looked particularly mysterious in the moonlight, as if she could see through my soul.

"Just thinking about tomorrow's ceremony," I answered softly.

Elder Willow approached me, her hand gently caressing my cheek. "Your eyes shine brighter in the moonlight, Luna. Your father's oath has protected you all these years, but remember, every oath has its time of ending."

My heart raced. Twelve years ago, on the night my parents were murdered, my father made me swear under the moonlight to hide my true identity and abilities until the time was right. It was a Moon Oath—the most sacred promise among werewolves, breaking which would bring the Moon Goddess's punishment.

"I often dream of that night," I whispered, "Father's blood staining his Alpha cloak, Mother lying beside him. His last words were making me swear to hide myself until my eyes could shine in the moonlight. But I don't understand what that means."

Elder Willow smiled mysteriously. "A Moon Oath is both a constraint and protection. Tomorrow, you will face choices, Luna. Remember, true power lies not in how strong a wolf you can become, but in the decisions of your heart."

She took a small vial from her pocket containing a deep blue liquid. "This is moonflower essence. Apply it around your eyes to temporarily mask the special glow of your irises. Tomorrow at the gathering, members of the Silver Star Pack will be present, including their young Alpha, Ethan Blackwood."

My pulse quickened at the name. I had never seen Ethan Blackwood, but stories of his strength and cold determination had reached even my ears. They said he became Alpha at twenty-two when his father was murdered, the youngest in Silver Star's history. They said his wolf was as black as midnight with eyes that glowed like silver fire. They said he had sworn vengeance against Moon Shadow Pack for his father's death.

"Why mention him specifically?" I asked, trying to hide the sudden flutter in my chest.

Elder Willow's eyes held a knowing gleam. "Because the wheels of fate have begun to turn," she said meaningfully. "Remember, when moonlight shines, truth cannot stay hidden forever."

After she left, I stood alone in the moonlight, my thoughts racing. Tomorrow's ceremony meant not only the possibility of finding my mate but perhaps the beginning of shedding my omega status and revealing the truth.

I walked to the small stream behind the barn, the only place where I could find moments of peace. The water reflected the full moon's radiance as I gazed at my reflection—a thin girl with silver-white hair and mismatched eyes. Left eye like sapphire, right eye like emerald, both flecked with gold. These eyes were my curse and my blessing.

In the water's reflection, I allowed myself to imagine what it might be like to be loved. To have someone look at me with tenderness instead of contempt. To feel the touch of a hand that wasn't raised to strike or command. My heart ached with a loneliness so profound it felt like a physical wound.

"Luna?" a familiar voice called from behind me.

My friend Mia emerged from the woods, one of the few in the pack who didn't look down on me for my omega status.

"Sneaking out again," she smiled, sitting beside me. "Thinking about tomorrow's ceremony?"

I nodded. "Do you think we'll find our mates?"

Mia sighed, her eyes reflecting the moonlight. "I hope so. They say when you meet your true mate, it's like nothing else in the world. Like finding a piece of yourself you never knew was missing." She nudged me playfully. "Maybe you'll get lucky and find someone from Silver Star Pack. I heard their wolves are particularly handsome."

"I heard Silver Star Pack's Alpha Ethan Blackwood will be there tomorrow," I said, trying to sound casual. "They say he's handsome and powerful, but cold-hearted. Ever since his father was killed by our pack, he's sworn to make the Moon Shadow Pack pay."

My heart sank. "That's just rumors. No one knows exactly how the hatred between the two packs began."

Mia's expression grew dreamy. "I've seen him once, from a distance. He's... breathtaking, Luna. Tall, with shoulders that seem to carry the weight of mountains. Hair as black as a raven's wing, and eyes that could pierce your soul." She shivered slightly. "But there's a darkness in him, a coldness. They say he's rejected every potential mate presented to him. Some whisper he's sworn never to mate at all, that his vengeance is the only companion he desires."

Her words painted a vivid picture in my mind, and I found myself imagining those piercing eyes looking into mine. Would they soften with recognition or harden with rejection? The thought sent an unexpected thrill through me, followed immediately by shame. He was the Alpha of our enemy pack, the man who had sworn to destroy us. Such thoughts were dangerous, foolish.

"Either way," Mia said softly, squeezing my hand, "tomorrow will be special. Perhaps the Moon Goddess will favor us."

By the time we returned to the barn, the moon hung high in the sky. I lay on my simple bed, unable to sleep. Tomorrow, everything could change. Would I find my mate? Would I continue hiding my identity? When would my father's Moon Oath end?

I closed my eyes, feeling my wolf's restlessness. Selene longed for freedom, to run, to show her power under the moonlight. But beneath that familiar yearning was something new—a strange anticipation, as if she knew something momentous awaited us.

"Just one more day," I promised her. "Perhaps tomorrow, we'll find answers."

As I drifted toward sleep, I dreamed of gray eyes that softened as they looked into mine, of strong hands that held me gently, of a voice that whispered my name like a prayer. And in that dream, I was not an omega but simply Luna—seen, known, and cherished for exactly who I was.
