"I am very happy for you, Ayo," Eki said with a voice a bit trembling. "This is an amazing opportunity."
Ayo's face showed both excitement and nervousness. "I know, it's very important." But the thought of leaving Lagos, leaving you guys, it's tough."
Their apartment, once busy and joyful, now feels very quiet. Without Ayo's energetic presence, there is an empty spot left behind. Eki found herself wandering through the rooms, searching for traces of her friend.
Days turned into weeks, and soon they began counting the days until Ayo's departure. They spent all their time together, recalling past moments and making new memories. It was a bittersweet time, filled with laughter and tears.
One evening, while they sat on their balcony with the city lights glowing below, Eki brought up something inevitable. "What about us, Ayo?" Long-distance relationships are tough."
Ayo took a deep breath. "I know. But I promise to make it work. We'll find a way to stay connected."
Eki wasn't convinced. Distance had a way of changing things. People changed, and priorities shifted. She felt scared of losing the bond they built over many years.
In the weeks before Ayo left, it was a very busy time. They helped Ayo with packing, said goodbye to friends they both knew and tried to make many memories in a short time.
The day when Ayo was leaving finally arrived, and the airport was filled with emotions everywhere. People were hugging each other, crying, and making promises all around. When Ayo walks through the departure gate, Eki feels a sudden loneliness she does not think would come.
The first weeks without Ayo were very difficult. The silence in the apartment was so strong it made my ears ache. Everywhere Eki went, she remembered their moments together. She tried to use work to push away the emptiness inside, but it only helped a little while.
She started to spend a lot more time at the cultural centre, throwing herself into her work with so much passion that it almost looked like an obsession. But even here, the absence of Ayo was still very noticeable. They were always a very good team, each one helping with what the other did not have. But now, Eki felt like she was by herself on this journey.
One evening, while she is staying late working, Ayo makes a video call to her. The screen lights up and shows her friend's happy face. It was a brief pause from feeling alone, but it also brought pain because it showed the big distance between them.
'I miss you," Eki said, her voice breaking.
Ayo's eyes filled with tears. 'I miss you too, more than words can say. But I'm doing okay. I'm making new friends, exploring the city."
It seemed like they showed a strong face, but Eki could sense the deep sadness hidden inside. They talked for many hours, telling stories about their lives and trying to become closer to each other.
When the call ended, Eki felt an emptiness inside. The connection they once had and their quiet understanding appeared to be fading more with each passing day.
A new worry started to appear. What if this distance means their friendship is starting to close? What if they were growing apart?
As weeks turned into months, Ayo began to understand the truth of his situation. The initial thrill of his new journey disappeared, and now he felt a strong longing for friendship. Eki discovered she was relying on her job more and more, channelling all her energy into her duties with a passion that felt almost like an obsession.
One evening, when she was late working at the cultural centre, she found an old photograph by accident. It is a picture of her with Dapo and Ayo during a university trip. They were young, had no worries, and lots of hope. She felt strong nostalgia come over her. They had come so far and achieved so much, but at what cost?
The distance between her and Ayo was getting wider, not just in miles but also in emotions. She missed the sudden laughs, the shared secrets whispered, and the comfort of knowing someone had her back.
A new project, which is a large plan to make an old market lively again, was presented to Eki. It seemed like difficult work which would require lots of time and hard work. It was a chance to prove that she could be a leader, but it also meant having even less time for her own life.
She stopped for a moment. The project seemed interesting, but the idea of spending less time with Ayo made her feel uncomfortable. She needed to make a decision, and she needed to make it quickly.
Meanwhile, Ayo was facing her challenges. The fast-paced world of London was overwhelming. The continual pressure to perform well and the loneliness of being in a new city overwhelmed her. She yearned for Lagos, missing Eki and Dapo greatly.
One night, while she sat alone in her apartment with all the new sounds and sights of the city surrounding her, she suddenly felt very homesick. She picked up her phone and called Eki. They talked for a long time, sharing their deepest feelings. It was like a lifeline for her, creating a bridge to the life she had left before.
When their talk was finished, Ayo shared her worries. She felt nervous about losing herself in the busy life of London and feared she might forget who she truly was.
Eki gave comfort to her and said she was very proud of Ayo's success. She reminded her friend about their shared dreams and the promises they made together.
At that time, they realized their friendship was stronger than any distance. They were connected by a bond no one could break, with love reaching past time and space.
After they ended the phone call, both were very sure about their feelings. They planned to find a way to make their relationship work even though they were far apart from each other. They support one another, encourage each other, and most importantly, they never leave their friendship behind.
The road ahead was not simple, with many troubles and opportunities. But together, they would face everything that comes their way. Their bond, forged in the crucible of friendship, was their greatest strength.
