Half an hour later.

I wrung my hands, watching helplessly as people crowded around Jack. His face had gone frighteningly pale.


"Jack, what were you thinking? Your allergies could kill you! Remember when you nearly died as a kid?"

I clenched my fists tighter, my mind spinning with worry.

"Jack, I..."


I started to speak, but a soft, theatrical voice cut me off.

"Oh my! Joel, Sophia couldn't possibly have known.


Please don't blame her, or she'll torture herself with guilt."

All eyes turned to me at once.

Someone muttered an accusation just loud enough to hear.

Then someone shoved me roughly.

"Sophia Sullivan! You vindictive bitch! Just because Joel dumped you doesn't mean you can hurt innocent people!"

Joel frowned, studying my face.

But surprisingly, he said flatly:

"She didn't know."

I caught the flash of annoyance that crossed his girlfriend's face.

Joel's phone rang, breaking the tension.

He frowned, glanced my way, and ignored it.

His girlfriend snatched the phone from his hand.

"Joel? This is Auntie. You and Sophia..."
