Joel's voice thundered through the room, brooking no argument.


The singing staff paled, stammered apologies, and scrambled out the door.

Meanwhile, Joel's precious first love casually picked up the gift box.

"Oh, Joel, look—Miss Sullivan made this necklace by hand.


It even has her initials engraved on it. How... thoughtful. It's... not mine..."

Before she could finish, a harsh clang cut through the air.


Joel had thrown the necklace against the wall.

"Trash."

That single word landed like a stone in my chest.

My phone rang, shattering the moment.

"Sophia? It's Mom.

"So, um, did Joel like the cake and gift?

I remember you saying those roses were his mother's favorites. He must appreciate how thoughtful you are.

Why don't you bring Joel over?

Since it's his birthday, I've made all those seafood dishes from back home.

Your father went fishing at dawn to catch everything fresh.

But, Sophia... do you think Joel might find our place too simple?

Would you be embarrassed? Should we book that fancy restaurant in town instead..."
