Chapter 23: Hidden Past

"We met once, ten years ago," Jack explained, his voice raspy from smoke damage. "Before you ever knew Michael Davis existed."

Zoe searched her memory, fragments of a forgotten encounter slowly emerging.

"It was you..." she whispered in astonishment. "The art auction in Paris!"

"Yes." Jack nodded. "You outbid everyone for my father's landscape. We talked for hours afterward. You said it reminded you of your childhood home."

The memory crystallized—a rainy Parisian evening, champagne under crystal chandeliers, an animated conversation about art and childhood dreams, and a reluctant goodbye as dawn approached.

"So you didn't save me just to use me against Michael?" she asked, searching his eyes.

Jack looked away. "You left your necklace at the auction house. I meant to return it, but by the time I tracked you down, you were already engaged to Michael."

"You kept it for ten years?" Zoe whispered, incredulous.

Jack didn't answer, but his silence spoke volumes.

Zoe studied his profile, understanding dawning. Gently, she turned his face toward hers. Their eyes met in perfect understanding, no words necessary.

Zoe leaned forward and pressed her lips to his. The kiss was tender yet certain, conveying everything words couldn't express.
