Chapter 28

Feeling my eyes rolling as my kids lift, waking up in a bright room I groan reaching my hand up. Something hurts on my face I think as my fingers reach to touch the painful area, gasping from the pain I sit up gently poking my face "what the—"

"You're awake," I hear coach's voice moving towards me "What happened?" I groan rubbing my head

"Took a ball to the face" he answers vaguely, "the nurse went to get your meds... I didn't know if I should call your folks or..."

"No please don't call them I'm fine" I quickly shake my head, "did the game end?"

"Yeah" coach looks at his watch, "you were out for a couple of hours" I nod, "and don't worry—" "Oh great you're up" a nurse walks in interrupting him, "hi Shane how are you feeling?"

"My face hurts" I answer as she stops in front of me, "and I think I fell pretty hard on my shoulder because it feels stiff."

"Okay" she nods, "I have some things that'll help with everything, two of these a day for the pain," she hands me a bottle then continues,

"this cream will help your bruise heal." "Thanks," I grab everything. "Are we free to go?"

"Sure" she smiles, "your coach signed everything," the nurse looks at him, "he's all yours. Feel better

Shane." Standing out of the bed I grab

my hat and before I can take a step the nurse adds, "wait— here rest this on your cheek, should help the burning pain."

"Thank you," I take the ice pack from her and leave with Coach Packer.

As he drives back to campus coach says, "Gentry told me what happened." Moving the ice pack from my cheek I turn to him, "I suspended

him from the team for the next 2 games"

I gulp getting nervous to ask, "am I suspended?"

"No" coach shakes his head, "Gentry took the blame for everything and just accepted the suspension."

"Okay." When he gets in front of my dorm coach stops, "thanks coach" I take off the seatbelt grabbing everything

"Get some rest, Visser" leaving the car I walk towards my building.

I can't believe it, Gentry McAllen hates me so much he put me in the hospital. When I came here 2 months ago I did not see this being my life, alone at college being tormented by a guy I couldn't help but fall for. This is all a reverse of how it was supposed to happen, isn't he supposed to hate me first then fall for me and kiss me. That's how they do it on tv!

Entering my building I head for the elevator climbing on, I can't wait to be in bed and I was supposed to video chat my mom tonight, how am I supposed to explain this? When the elevator stops on my floor I get off and turn, stopping immediately I stare at the figure in the distance sitting on the floor by my door.

"Oh god" I sigh, with his head down Gentry doesn't see me so I quickly turn but the elevator doors shut and it starts going down. Groaning I press the button but I'm too late because Gentry looks up and sees me.

Quickly standing up Gentry picks up what I'm assuming is my gym bag and waits, even if I left where would I go? I just want to go home and I'm not letting him stop me

Walking towards my door I stop when Gentry stands in front of it, I hate that he towers over me, and when I have to glare at him I'm the one that has to look up to him.

The hall is empty, with some distance between us Gentry speaks first, "that looks gnarly" "Yeah thanks" I keep my eyes out of his for my own sake, "is that my stuff?"

He nods "I have your keys and phone too,"

walking over I reach out about to grab everything from him but Gentry steps back, "please just give me my stuff" I ask not having the strength to fight him.

"Let me do it," he replies and I watch as he turns to my door using my key to unlock it. Holding the door open I walk in then he shuts it

I'm not really sure what's happening, but I watch as Gentry drops everything then walks over taking the meds from my hands. "Go sit down," he says with his back turned to me

Walking over to my bed I sit at the end of it, Gentry opens my pills grabbing one, then he opens my mini-fridge pulling out a bottle of water. Turning back to me he comes close and hands me both, "what are you doing?" I look up at him

"Just let me help you, Shane." Imagine feeling bad now after trying to take my head off, but still, I don't say anything. Taking the pill and water from him I throw it in my mouth then take a sip. When I'm done he sits next to me taking the bottle back. "Is this for your bruise?"

He asks staring at the small tube of cream the doctor gave me, I just nod and he slightly turns facing me. Opening the tube he squeezes some on his finger about to reach over but I move back, "sit still" he inches closer.

As gentle as he can Gentry begins applying the cream to my bruised cheek, there's no pressure so it doesn't hurt and I have to admit the cream does make it feel better. But Gentry McAllen is still sitting so close to me using the same hand he chucked a baseball at me earlier.
