"A-Alpha," Doctor Raymond stuttered, "she's too strong. Any more wolfsbane and she'll be dead. It's the baby. The baby is just as powerful as she is."
I stared at Doctor Raymond with wide eyes. "I'm pregnant?"
He turned and nodded at me but was cut off before he could respond by Alpha Christian. "Would you like us to congratulate you, Luna?" he asked sarcastically.
"I don't need anything from you, jackass," I replied and turned back to Doctor Raymond. "Please, Doctor Raymond, are you sure?"
He gave me a half smile as if he was holding back his pity. "Yes, my child. In a few months, you'll give birth to a baby boy."
I felt something lodged in my throat as I struggled to swallow; the information made me feel lightheaded and weak.
"Part Alpha, part red wolf. He'll be raised as my son by Bailey and me. He'll call us mom and dad. He'll learn to protect this pack at all costs, and if you cooperate, maybe I'll let you live to see him become your Alpha," Alpha Christian declared.
I felt a tiny thump in my stomach—unlike anything I'd felt before. It was my baby, my son. He was part me and part Jaxon, made from every fiber of our love and devotion to one another. It was as if he was calling out to me to protect him. My heart reminded me that I was all he had.
Before I could think through my next move, I lunged forward and felt my canines extend as I ripped flesh out of Alpha Christian's neck. I could taste the metallic flavor lingering on my tongue as blood spewed out of him. It tasted so good. His blood gave me a rush of adrenaline.
A high-pitched scream, which I instantly recognized as Bailey's, echoed through the room, but I didn't stop. I wouldn't stop until he lay still on the ground, surrounded by a pool of his own blood.
I felt something pierce my skin as the liquid began flowing into my veins. I struggled to hold my head up as my limbs grew heavy and everything around me began to darken. I heard Doctor Raymond behind me as he pulled the needle from my neck.
"Shh, that's a good girl, Adeline," he said softly.
I tried to fight but it was no use. Still, I kept trying to push forward until I drifted deep into an empty abyss, far, far away.
"Wake up, you worthless bitch."
I heard the muttering of a familiar voice, but no matter how hard I tried, I couldn't open my eyes. It was as if someone had poured concrete over them to seal them shut forever.
"It's no use. He killed her. Fuck, what use is she now? How are we going to take over, Christian?" a frantic female voice complained.
"I'll fucking kill that damn doctor with my bare hands. What a waste he was to bring here. It's been four days since she's been out," the male voice said, his anger spilling from him.
I couldn't help but feel uneasy as his rage twisted and tugged at my insides.
"Baby, you have to calm down. Even if the wolfsbane kills her, we can still save the baby. The baby might be a red wolf after all. You heard what Doctor Raymond said," Bailey told him, and I felt his anger tone down a notch or two.
"Come on, sweetheart, we have other plans to take care of," she said in a seductive voice that made me want to hurl.
I felt my wolf perk up at the mention of my baby, the heir of Midnight Moon. A strange possessive sensation took over my body, and something about this new feeling confirmed to me that I would burn down this pack to the ground before I'd leave my flesh and blood in the hands of these two monsters.
I wondered if this was the maternal instinct my mother always referred to. "Just you wait until you have your own pups, Adeline!" she'd say.
My eyelids burst open, and that's when I saw my necklace, the one gifted by Luna Fraya, glowing deep crimson. I slid my hands to cup the pendant as quietly as I could and covered the bright light, terrified that if they noticed, they wouldn't stop until the necklace was in their possession.
"Alpha," a husky voice called from behind. I hadn't realized there were more than the three of us in the room.
"He's here. He wants to talk," the man continued.
Alpha Christian heaved a sigh. "Maybe a distraction will be good. Sweetheart, I'll meet you for lunch soon."
Bailey stuttered over her words, making it clear she didn't want Alpha Christian to leave her side, but she never had the nerve to admit it. Instead, she finally smiled, and I heard her give him a kiss on the cheek before exiting the room.
"Hm, sweet girl," the man said, and suddenly I wasn't sure who he was talking about.
"Touch her, and I'll rip your throat out to nail onto a stake and display in the town square right beside Jaxon's," Alpha Christian threatened.
I swallowed the gasp that nearly exposed me. A click sounded throughout the room, and when the door shut, I took a moment to tune into my surroundings. Only when I felt how still the room was did I decide to lift my body up and turn around.
